Any bands or players out there use this amp without being death metal and the like? I tend to think the crunch channel sounds pretty legit as is!

90% of what I play is non metal. I love the crunch channel on my 6505+.
I do spend most of my time on channel two with the gain backed off and hit a TS for leads.

I agree with you that the crunch setting on channel one is one of the great rock guitar tones out there. If you can't rock on that channel you're not doing it right!

The Nuge used to play 5150s for quite some time I believe.

I play both kinds of music here: Metal & Djent

I used my 5150 in a rock cover band. Fuel, Filter, Bush. That kind of stuff. And of course I added some Van Halen. Old guitar player used a Dual Recto. He sat in and used my amp. Couldn't stop talking about how good my 5150 sounded and how it suprised him. Ed designed the amp and I don't care what anyone says, there's old VH in that amp. Not plexi super lead tones no. I've always said it reminds me of VH II. Beautiful Girls seems to sound really good to me. Supposedly Ed sent his Marshall and his SLO head and said copy them. Marshall being the Rhythym channel and SLO the lead. I don't know if that's true. But it's a good story! I don't use the Rhythm channel. Try to get it cleanish and with a Strat and turning down the guitars volume I got by. Barely. But it's a good channel for rock fo sho. These days I'm actually playing two 5150 half stacks in stereo with my new H9 and love it! Lots of Carnal Knowledge and Balance tunes coming from my basement these days. I'd play any gig tomorrow with that amp. Yes it has it's short comings. Like soudmen hate me because I refuse to turn down the bass. I like the thump! And sometimes the extra gain stage fizz annoys me. I just turn the cab slightly and I don't hear it as much. That's so,eating most people don't get. Play the amp in a store and you'll say it's too fizzy. The amp was made to be played loud and some of the fizz goes away at gig/band volumes. Watch some VH vids from the mid 90s. Ed's tone is killer. Little too much Eventide sometimes. But not at all a fizzy buzzy sound.

5150s ain't just for metal kids!

totally not rock or metal, but I have seen Brantley Gilbert's band and Jason Aldean's band both use 6505 series amps in their on stage rigs. Hell Brantley Gilbert's guitarist or rather one of them used to play in a band called pillar around the early 2000's that had a few hits. they were a rock/metal band, and it looks like his exact rig kind of moved over to the country side of things.

Yeah I can nail old VH with one. Crunch channel. Little delay. It's super good. Not much tweaking either. Just toss a graphic EQ in the loop. Solid.

Proper biasing of the 5150 / 6505 amps goes a long way to getting rid of that fizzy buzz and warming up the tone.
Makes the lower gain crunch tones from channel 1 a lot sweeter.

I just don't get this whole non-adjustable, super cold, fixed bias thing that some of these manufacturers do with their power tubes.....

I'm lookin' at you too Mesa..... :gethim:

yeah been saying it you guys keep spending billions my 5150 cost me $300 kills most of them for any music , except fender stuff...been well documented, problem for me these days is too much power need 20 wattish...hello pt-20

Jerry Cantrel, Jake E. Lee, Ted Nugent, Collective Soul, Pete Lesperance (Harem Scarem), Jag Tanna (I Mother Earth), Skid Row have all used a 5150/5150II

I had my 6505 dialed in to get some old Cream tones. I got pretty close, either way I was happy to get that old electric blues tone. It's not my main amp anymore but I hesitate to sell because it's such a good amp. Man that thing is frickin heavy though, to carry.

Edit: Forgot to mention as others have said I had my modded and biased properly. Can't remember what was modded though. Also I tried removing 2 tubes and variacing it down to get some browner tones. That worked well too, got more spongy. I got that from some VH site, VHAholic or something?

Yep Ross from Collective Soul used 5150s and Twin Reverbs starting on their 2nd album. Any hard rock tone you hear from them is 5150 baby. He said that EVH gave him one after they had toured with them back in the 90's.

This is all 5150

The Reverend Willie G.
Joe Satriani
Andy Timmons
Richie Sambora
Steve Brown
Adrian Vandenberg

And I saw a country artist with a black Peavey Wolfgang and a Peavey 2x12 combo behind him on some country music awards show way back when. I was flipping through the channels and stumbled across it.
I have the same guitar so it stuck in my brain. Shows the amps are more versatile than most think.

That's so true. I watch a lot guitar related youtube videos and sure enough there seems to always be a 5150/6505 in the background.
