Just a friendly reminder that not all sm57s or their variants sound the same. I love doing tests like this, while subtle, they will most definitely make big differences in your mix.
Clips are 3 different variants of a 57: a new SM57, a vintage SM545, and my favorite, a vintage unidyne sm57.

chain was: ESP horizon, EMG 57/66 set, pepers dirty tree boost, Diezel herbert channel 3, Marshall 1960BV cab, microphones, into DAW. The only plug-in is a sominus 1073 input plug for some girth and weight.

on the first clip, there no EQ outside of a high/low pass at 65 hz and 12k

the second set of clips has a mild narrow cig around 3k that bugs me alittle, but doesn’t drastically alter the tone at all.

I’ll post which is which in the near future, just curious what everyone’s favorite is. Also SoundCloud ruins the tone, but it is what it is. *STUDIO MONITORS OR HEADPHONES A MUST*

Enjoy.

Sounds totally Metal.. Really, there's not a lot of difference between them from what I can hear.
But if it works for you then that's what matters..

Haha man there is a huge difference for sure between them, just depends on how much you care about the differences!

Thanks for posting this. Yep they all have they're own little peaks and dips going on, it all adds up. I've been doing a 3 mic thing the last few years, 57, 421 and VR1 ribbon. Very versatile setup depending on the blend and positioning.

sounds good. my guess of mic order is: unidyne, new 57, 545. I like them in the same order that you played them, first one best, at least soloed. Second one more cut in mix? Last one is fuzzier. fairer test would be no filtering of any kind, but still a good test, I can clearly hear differences. listening on studio phones.

I’ll send out the order later. I think it’s as fair as it possibly can be, considering a cut at 12k and 65hz doesn’t really take away much other than some rumble and some fizz, neither of which any of the mics really produce that high that would’ve been audible to most, especially after some of the responses I’ve got in the past haha! I will tell you though, your guess/order of guessing is wrong :)
Glad you are listening on studio monitors/headphones though, because I’m really surprised how anyone who understands guitar tone and how things sit could NOT consider these pretty drastic, especially considering they are all “ the same mic”!!!

A small bump or cut on the Mixer EQ would bring them together, plus any small mic placement differences also contribute.. To me the bones are pretty much the same..

A lot of people seem to believe that just about everything is correctable with eq, but yet no one ever actually proves or backs the claim. Although I tend to agree, these kinds of differences are much easier/possible to correct with eq than say, transient responses related to tube types, saturation, and other harmonic content etc . Also I would agree mic placement would contribute as well, but not this drastic, and I made sure to put extra care into putting each mic in the exact same spot possible, Atleast humanly possible anyways. :)

Welp, I guess I’ll reveal!

First: vintage 545, 2nd: vintage unidyne sm57, 3rd: new sm57.

Thanks for listening guys! Not surprised the unidyne is a favorite for many, it’s truly an amazing mic to me.
