Hack
Initial reactions: The pick is designed in a way that suprised me. the metal part does not run through. I thought the handle would cover the metal. Instead the handle joins to the metal. This makes for a weird hinge that I feel like will be the weak point and make this pick need to be replaced.

Playing it, i place my hand right before the metal joint, so that the hinge effect is very subtle. The interaction is cool, but I don't feel like the attack is as nice as my other picks. This could be because of the rounded edge. I usually play with sharp picks

I like it, but i need to play a lot more than this 10 minute session to decide if it is for me.

Why you guys tend to go towards the thicker picks? They’re boomy. Ok for solos, shit for rhythms.

Those seem cool but they’re made of nylon. I could go through a nylon pick like water. Do they offer other materials?

they have a wide variety of picks i know but no clue about other materials unfortunately...they're super thick dude, i've yet to make a dent and i play 11s and have a relatively heavy picking hand

but you may have the hand of thor so i don't doubt your ability to blow through em

These 1.6mm nylons would probably last much longer but I can ruin a typical <1mm Dunlop nylon in one song

you have a way heavier picking hand than i do, i dont think i've ever done that haha

I totally disagree. Thicker picks are nasty for rhythm.very strong atrack and crushing palm mutes
Chuck used .88 Tortex. As did James. And many other great rhythm players too.

Thicker picks pull string if dig too deep, instead of snapping off it and giving that attack. And add boominess to attack to my ear.

I was given some of the Dava control picks to try, I just didn't like the ribs. It felt like it was creating pick drag and chirp. I play a lot on edges, and I also hold my picks on the side.

you just need to get down with the thicccnesss boi
Nice reference 😁

I have loads of thicker picks, even got some Winspear sample pack with the guitar. Thick picks are great for solo, but no matter how you try, boominess won’t go away, it is literally audible with quick swapping back and forth.

I have been trying to play with flimsy shit lately. I use them for acoustic. But with electric, i feel the need to punish the strings. I pick hard as fuck and the flimsiness doesnt make me happy.

Switching to nylons improved my tone a lot.

Dunlop jazz III XLs are the shit.

Have you tried 1mm Tortex? You really can play them pretty hard, even .88s too. I am not talking like 0.70 stuff. Also there are pointy TIII Tortex, which are great!

I will try 1

The 1.35 were my favs for awhile. I have some .88 ..i didnt care for them, but i will revisit today

I'm with @CrystalSky on this one; I play mostly faster types of metal, tuned in E flat, E and drop D occasionally, so none of that 7/8-string wet noodle BS, and while I've lingered for a long time on Dunlops 1.14mm and 1.0mm, I went (back) down to Ultex 0.9 and 0.73mm, as well as Dunlop Jazz III's in 0.73mm and standard Tortex in 0.88mm and 0.73mm, and they give me more snappiness in tone as well as faster control for Iced Earth-like rhythm playing.
Or you know, getting cocky with downstrokes only playing MOP at 220bpm and then seeing this version... o_O

"Faster of Puppets"

Try that with >1.2mm picks for funsies, downpicking only. 😉 (Even James got tired of that every once in a while... link: )

I will say that going below 0.73mm you will also lose control and power for fast chugging and the few picks I have aroun 0.6mm or 0.5mm I only use on my 2 nylon strings.

More on topic; I do like the Dava picks; I';ve been using the regular dark green Control Nylon one for years now, as well as the slightly bigger Rock Control Delrin. They do wear down faster than Ultex tho'...

Even on 7-8 string stuff, Fredrik Thordendal uses 1 mm nylon Dunlop iirc.

Josh Middleton also delivers so mighty chops with .88 TIII among today’s generation.

One day after I got an envelope of picks from fellow forumite, I took out all the different picks I had and just played the same couple riffs over and over testing them gauges and came to conclusion that 0.88-1.0 made of tortex is just right. Since then my mind is at peace, I can grab some cool pick for the collection occasionally, but I never hesitate when buying my main picks.

The great side benefit is also you always can pick up a standart pick at a shop and play without need to adjust if need be, instead of searching everywhere for a 3 foot thick vibranium pick to feel comfortable 😂
