Man this has been bugging me for weeks now. So I got the Herbert with SED 6L6's and have been comparing it over and over to the Vh4S which has EL 34 Ruby BSTR's. I am so anal about the differences and keep preferring the Vh4S. I even kept tweaking and tweaking and tweaking ch 2 and 3 of ther herbie with the basic settings and mid cut and just the Vh4S sounds so much better for the tone I am looking for.  So I got the Herbie changed to SED winged late dist El34's and the tone improved but still the same issue....the Vh4S is more the tone I am looking for. What really nailed it's coffin was recording this morning. I tried the Herbie over and over tweaking it and the mic placement........then got fed up and switched over to the Vh4S and boom......I was in heaven

So my problem is this. If I go and sell the Herbie and get a Vh4 (not a Vh4S as they seem impossible to find when I search all the time for a used one)and have the same tubes as my Vh4S (the ruby BSTRS El34's) will it sound the same?? As far as I know the Vh4S is lower wattage right?? So I guess what I just need to know is will a Vh4 sound just like my Vh4S with the same tubes biased accordingly. Thanks guys!

if you wondering why two....because once I set my garage up into a nice cosy jam space I want one amp down in the rehearsal room and one upstairs for recording with my Lexicon Lambda and PC.

well..... I mean, it's your money and all and no one is entitled to tell you what you should or should not do with it, but for a "non-professional" musician (meaning, you don't actually make a living out of making/playing music.........and if you do, then things could be different) it's waste of money to have the same amp just because you don't want to lug your amp from one room to the other.

If you ask me, you already have an amazing amp (VH4S) and getting another one would be only for "lazy" reasons. Stick with the Herbert, or sell it and try an Einstein, or maybe another brand (I'd look into Egnater/Randall modular series....they seem to be REALLY versatile specially for recording and stuff)

OR, sell the Herbie and use that money to get some more recording goodies, there's never enough good mics. A rocking pre-amp would be GREAT, or maybe get some iso-cabs, I've heard they're GREAT for recording specially when you can't REALLY crank the amp.....etc etc....

I don't know buddy.....it's your call, but owning two VH4s seem kind of silly (hell James Hetfield only has TWO! hehehehe)

I second that. You'd better sell me your VH4S instead :-). Hahaha, I mean, I'm saving money to buy one, and hearing things like that make me re-think my job situation...seriously, congratulations!
I'd like to be able to consider shelling another $ 4000 just for convenience...whatever, it's your call.

I hear ya guys and it is really not for just being Lazy. My band is really coming together and the demo's and songs we are working on are coming out really tight when we play. So we expect to be gigging a lot, as our vocalist has tons of contacts with venues and other bands in the nYC area, plus I have a customer I sell med/surg equipment who books bands and I plan to utilize her to gig as much as we can. We make no bones about it, we think we have something different or semi original. Meaning kinda like a fusion of my love for new wave and 80's pop music and then my metallica fan boy shit     and we don't plan to start gigging for money. We plan to gig as much as possible, record an EP, begin the press kits, and flood as many A and R's as possible and try to get signed. I kinda have some experience with this whole thing, as my last band was managed by a guy at Arista and at the time (2000) they were looking for rock bands. So we used to show case for them, J-Records, Wind Up and a bunch of others. Ultimately we did not get signed and broke up mainly due to our singer plain sucked live, was so nervous, and the feedback was the same. I remmeber being in the Arista building on 57th street meeting with Joey Arnage the A and R at the time who signed Pink, Tony Braxton, and TLC.....who was looking to sign more rock bands as they just signed From Zero (went no where really but a great band) and Adema. Adema had some success, but I don't know what they are up to now. Anyhoo, sorry to bore ya with all this just felt like sharing my excitment that things are coming to fruition with my band and I am really optimistic that we got something. :D just hope we can raelly do it and get a deal. Shit I would leave my medical device sales job in a heart beat for a record deal   Even though most don't make it, just the shot or dream of making a record and touring has always been my dream.

Sorry for the long boring post, just did vocals for a new song today and really really excited. :)

yup, that is the combo of the Vh4 blended with his Multiple Triaxis' and now Mesa 2:90's. His live tone sound killer and I gotta admit I like Quirk Hammetts lead tone with the Randalls. Kinda more luquidy and smooth for his solo's. :)

yup, that is the combo of the Vh4 blended with his Multiple Triaxis' and now Mesa 2:90's. His other Vh4 is just a back up. His live tone sound killer and I gotta admit I like Quirk Hammetts lead tone with the Randalls. Kinda more luquidy and smooth for his solo's. :)

yeah man, those Randall KH sound massive....I like his rythm tones a lot too (saw them live two times in June).

I think James has the triaxis for some "sounds" right? at least what I heard live was pretty much the VH4.

I think his rhythm is a blend. I dunno. Monty sent me pix after the show of his rig at break down and you can see them all. He always tended to blend multiple amps or pre/power amps for his live rig. The 80's I think it was a Mark IIC+ and a bunch of ADA preamps I think

Hell, buy 3 and put one in your bathroom it's your money.

I think there's two things to consider here:

1)If you definitely don't like the herbie, there's no point keeping it...
2)You already have a VH4s, why not get another Diezel or a totally different brand all together?

Variety might be nice? I had 2 MK50h's for a week. Sure it was nice to look at but it really didn't make sense so I sold one and bought another second amp. More flavor that way.

It is not so much to have a variety, that was what the herbie was for. I will look into some of the boogie stuff like maybe the old Mark stuff or a stilleto or something. In the studios we jam at I for sure did not like the recto's, the 5150, and the marshalls. Just I am anal about when I find a tone I like I only want that, and I really love the VH4S for my sound for some reason

Well in that case I'd sell herbie and blow the money on booze and bitches :D

Kidding aside, I'm pretty sure you'd be wondering about another amp in a month and since you have 2 of the same amp, you wouldn't think twice about selling one to check out another. That's what happened to me and believe me I'm obsessed with the MK. But selling 1 of the two was easy as heck cause it's not really necessary lol. So why not cut to the chase and skip the whole get another VH and sell it for another part?

I'm just speculating of course... Good luck on whatever you decide to do!
