Scored what seems to be a killer front loaded carvin 412 with a heavy cane grillcloth front for 100 bucks! Problem is removing the front seems impossible, anyone know whats up?

Hmm..any FL cab I’ve owned, there’s usually a ‘tab’ of cloth somewhere along the grill edge that you pull, and off it comes. But, the older Fender Tonemaster cabs you’d have to get a flathead screwdriver and pry it off gently

I could be wrong, but looks like a replaced grillcloth with an old Carvin badge, on a 90's carvin cab. It should just pry off right?

No on all counts. It's playing hardball. I called Scumback Jim but he must be out in the shop. Struggling here fellas...

I wonder if they replaced the grillcloth and used staples/wood nails....do you see signs of staples or nails?

No, it looks stock to me. I tried finding pics of a cab like this and it must be old, nothing like it. It weighs 4000 lbs

Only thing I noticed is that the handles are the 90's carvin handles (which could be replacements) and has the old Carvin badge. But the cloth kinda looks too new/good condition to match the wear on the cab. Would be cool to open it and find some g12-65's or something

How do know they're from the 90's and not older? Here's a quote I found on another site...

Looks like one of the older cabs before they switched over to carpeted covering at the end of the 80s. I had an '89 carpeted one, and it was built like a tank - all ply (no MDF/Particle). Loved it. Great, tight sound from what I can remember, but a lot would obviously depend on what speakers are in there.

I am going by when Carvin began using that font. It was early/mid 90's, if I can remember. The badge on the front of the cab is the older Carvin badge. So I am thinking someone either replaced the handles, or it's a 90's cab someone retolexed and put on an old badge.

If there is no visible screws on the front and you can't open it with a flat head screwdriver in between the front baffle and the edge of the cab, then try removing the logo and see if the logo screws are holding the front too.

It looks like it could be a replacement grill cloth held in by the white piping along edge? Or possibly glued on?

FWIW, on an older cab I'd probably use auto trim removal tools rather than a metal screwdriver. They're wider and plastic so they won't damage the tolex. Don't pry with them. You just shimmy them in there. I'd use screwdrivers on a cab I'm planning to play out hard, and not worry about it.

I'm no help from what we see in the rest of the thread. I've never encountered a front-loaded amp cab that was tough to figure out what needed done - some of them are a PIA, but I knew how to get to them. Good luck.

I used very thin metal putty knives and once i was past the dirt and excess glue it popped out. Before that i pulled the handle to look inside and there was insulation packed in there. You can see the quality of the wood and it looks like 5 ply, notice how the back is glued in one of the pics. Also, the center support is a wide block....and no celestions🤬
I read up on this cab and these loudspeakers were rumored to be favored by SRV for certain tones. I'm super happy for $100 bucks and I'll sell the speakers and easily make my money back🤘
