A good friend of mine asked me to do a setup and string change on his 1985 Flying V.

He has owned this V since the early 90s.

It’s been through some changes over the years. He stripped the finish off shortly after he bought it. Then he had late, legendary Luthier, Pete Moreno put a maple fretboard on it. This V surprisingly has a 1 piece maple neck!

My friend said it had EMGs in it when he bought it, but now it sports a set Burstbuckers.

He still has the original Gibson case which has seen better days from years of gigging.

As far as the setup…the truss rod needed just a little tightening. The action is medium/low. It plays very nice!!! The burst buckers sound fabulous in this V!

It’s a really fun guitar to play!!!

I recently took the finish off of my LP neck. Sick that this V had such a gorgeous neck hiding beneath! Definitely a very cool guitar.

Turned mine into a satin finish with some Scotch Brite pads, since it seemed whoever did the nitro @Gibson back in '05 was probably hungover from the weekend and didn't cure it correctly...it kept getting sticky again after gigs.

@BRENTrocks is that silver thingy just a filler for what used to be another pot-hole, or maybe a kill-switch?
Very interesting selection of woods indeed!

It used to be a mini toggle hole and he had me delete the toggle switch and install a kill switch in its place

I debated and debated on it. In the end, I decided the black paint just wasn't inspiring me and started scraping. Absolutely love the mahogany exposed on mine. Sounds like you made a good choice if it was sticking to ya. They always get a bit sticky when it gets hot anyway IME, so sanding a bit away really helps to smooth it out and speed it up.

My ‘84 I’ve had, since the mid 2000’s. Its neck shape is just home for me. Same with the 2005 model I have. Great necks. ‘84 has an Alder body and before I knew that, I was a Mahogany purist for Gibson’s but the guitar’s tone is undeniably Gibson, through and through.
