I'm having trouble dialing in an aggressive tone ala AIC or a bright and punchy tone ala VH. It sounds great for the lower to mid gain tones and has a surprisingly nice clean tone. I've tried it with TS 6550's and TS 5881's. I really like the tone but for the classic/modern rock gig I'm doing it doesn't seem to fit a lot of the material. Is there something I'm missing with this module or should I look for a SL2/SL2X or EG 3/4/EG 3/4X ?

Thanks,
Billy

Are you not having any luck pushing the front end w/ a pedal?

Otherwise, the Brown Eye/HBE/SL2/SL2x/EG34, etc. will fit the bill...just a matter of taste for which
you like best.

If you want that agressive marshall tone...get a Hilligan modded XTC. It does that tone PERFECTLY. I sold my SL2X and EG5 because of that module. That and a BB preamp are amazing!

Eric,

Is Jeff doing duals or just singles? I guess I didn't realize he was doing his own modules. Thx.

Do you have the B channel gain dimed/cranked?

That usually gets me plenty far into aggressive/Van Halen 80's metal.

The XTC module is just a mod to the Randall XTC module. low cost mod to an existing module. The one I have is a single channel. The single channel set at a bit mid-gain w/t he BB to drive it harder feels like a dual channel! I love it. It's my favorite module by far that's for sure!

The SL has plent of gain. I'm not getting the punch that I'm looking for. The SL is a little more sluggish and squishy. When you hear Eddie's tone it's bright with some twang to the treble notes. I'm talking about VH II and Fair Warning tones.

Your not going to get that out of an SL.

SL excels at AC/DC, Led Zep type stuff, it isn't going to do VHII and Fair Warning tones!

You need a SL2/SL2x/ HBE type module with gain set around 12 o'clock.

Thanks for the reply Doubleneck. It sounds like I need a SL2/SL2X or a BE/HBE.

having ownEd the hbe and worked with jeff on voicing the sl2x I can tell you I think the kidded xtc is the best module for this. It does aic in spades. Definitely the best sounding modern Marshall tone I have ever heard in a module. Cleans up very well and tAkes pedals very well. Definitely recommnend it even though it is a single channel module. I'm really liking the single channel modules all boosted with the bb if I want more gain. It just sounds best IMHO. Outside of the vx and cod I really don't see a great need for dual channels. I personally think the single channel modules sound the best and have no tonal compromise at all.
