Just curious, I've played them, liked 'em. I know several people who have them and like them. Gary Holt gets a KILLER tone out of his.....

what do you guys think?

i think it's "cool" to hate them. i haven't played one in years, but i remember digging it. there's one locally for $500 that i'm trying to ignore

never played one but there's a friend of mine in san diego, reuben, who plays one and i LOVE the tone he gets out of it. granted, fingers, pups and guitars all come in to play here but his XXX tone smokes his jmp-1 tone. sounds beautiful.

The 5150 and XXX compliment eachother very well. I owned a XXX before my 5150 and it was really awesome, but my opinion is the voicing sounded a bit "hollow" to me. The 5150 has a darker more aggressive tone imho.

Not a big fan of the XXX personally.
not swedish enough for ya?

:D

Nah, I just didn't like the voicing that much. Haven't played one in a while though, but no desire to do so either.

i always thought it sounded like a more refined 5150. my ears may be bad tho.

That's kind of how I describe the Blackmore sometimes, but nothing actually sounds like a 5150 IMO. I'd like to try a JSX with 6L6's sometime though.

I never messed with the "ultra" channel, was just kinda mushy, but the crunch channel always sounded great.........

I had a XXX a couple years ago. I liked that amp, but it was a little too modern voiced for me. It can sound huge, but can easily be over bassy. In a way I suppose its Peavey's take on a recto-ish sound.

if it's over bassy...wouldn't you just turn down the bass? i don't think i've ever played an amp that i couldn't take out enough bass. not trying to start shit...just askin.

I've never paid one but I hear they sound similar to the JSX, which I own and dig. If you do pick up a XXX try running it through anything other than a Peavey cab.

Oh yea, I actually do what a matching 5150 cab, but I'm gonna swap out the speakers for V30s. But I have a couple other cabs to run it through, and looking around for another GOOD cab. :)

I think I may pick one of these up just for fun......I dont know yet though.

I was making the point that it has a huge lowend and the bass can get a little out of control, especially at higher volumes. I found that I had a tough time finding the sweet spot at times. Then again that could have had something to do with that damn g-flex....

$575 shipped a good price? or should I keep looking?

That's a good price, I got mine local for $500 flat. I kept seeing them pop up for about the same price $600 at most.

I haven't followed prices recently, but I sold mine for $625 2 years ago and that was a local pick-up deal. I would think $575 is pretty decent.

I'm debating on weather or not, having it AND the 5150 would be overkill.

Is there enough tonal difference between it and the 5150? or are they too close?

Hmm, I'd say the 5150 is a bit more aggressive. The XXX has got a lot more versatility to it compared to the 5150. Hold on I'll post some clips of dual XXX's in action on a song or two..
