I am planning a February/March time frame Boar hunt and I am keeping it simple and somewhat historically accurate(mid 1800's). So here is my "tool" kit .
The Rifle I will use on this hunt is my Lyman 54 Cal "deerstalker". This rifle is a tackdriver with both round balls and conicals. My son will be using my T/C 50 Cal "Hawken"(also a great shooting gun).
During my pre hunt scout of the hunting area I will decide if the conditions(Boar size, terrain, etc) will allow for me to make a quick clean kill with round balls as I prefer to hunt with those on this trip but I will also have Hornady "Great Plains" 54 cal, 425 grain hollow base/hollow points and 50 Cal "buffalo" bullets (son) with me if I the situation calls for those.

Backups will be my two CVA 45 Cal pistols I built from kits ( I also built the Hawken).

The "possibles" bag is Buffalo hide with deer antler button and the powder horn is also Buffalo. The small accessory pouch is deerskin.Within it I carry my caps, nipple wrench, spare nipples, prelubed patches, and a powder measure. The "ballbag" is Buffalo hide with a deer antler spout. It is drilled out just large enough for one ball to pass through at a time. Also on hand is my ball starter.
Although I have hunted for 30+years this is my first Blackpowder large game hunt and my sons first ever hunt. This is something I have wanted to do forever and I am really glad my son is going to share it with me( he is 17 and a great shot).
Is there any advice you guys who have Blackpowder hunted have for me as far as equipment is concerned?
Sorry about the picture quality, I took them with my cell phone. :)

Thanks John

Hey man, glad to hear there are a few other black powder hunters around! I'm deer hunting with BP over Christmas break now in Nebraska. I used one of those .54 cals like you have for quite a while. Lately, I've switched to inline because most of the shots I've been taking are in the 100-150 yard range and I cannot get the round balls to group consistently at that distance, but if you can shoot consistently more power to you, you're a way better shot than I am. Anyways, for "must take gear" I always took those plastic quick loaders and an electronic range finder. Sounds like a great hunt, good luck and hope you and your son have a great time.

Good luck with your hunt and let me know how you do, pics would be killer!!!From the bench this rifle is shooting 1.5 inch groups at 75 yards with patch and ball!!!I have found that magic combination of patch thickness and ball diameter for this rifle. That is about the range I will be targeting the Boar from. They are among the easiest of all wild game to stalk and I will be hunting from heavy cover.Perfect conditions for a Blackpowder hunt.Did you buy your speedloaders online and if so where? I would like to have several of those in my kit. Thanks Dude and talk at you soon.............John

Hi John,

Here are some of the speed loaders

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templ ... &noImage=0

They are life savers if you miss---which I seem to do quite frequently   . I think I've also seen them at Walmart for about half the price. 1.5 inch groups are amazing for the old ball and patch, you must have found the sweet spot for sure. What powder are you using? Old style black, pydrodex, 777? I will certainly post some pics if I get a decent buck. All the bucks around here are pretty skid-ish, but there are a couple monsters around. You will have to certainly post some pics of you and your son's hunt.

I normally use only Goex Blackpowder. I do have a pound of the Goex subsitute stuff I have never even opened but since I have the rifle dialed in I am not about to change a thing at this point :D . Looking forward to pics and I will for sure post some of ours. thanks and Merry X Mas............John

Hi Zepman,

I hunt with a T/C New Englander in .54 I also shoot a round ball and use real black powder. If you are getting groups like that I would stick with the Black Powder. Also I would recommend the previously mentioned speed loaders. They really help with follow up shots. Good luck on your hunt.

Thanks Bro, I will definitely grab the speedloaders. .

I used to hunt with those old BP rifles with a patch and ball. What I remember most is the many deer that I shot at and missed, and then reloading as fast as possible with frozen fingers :aww: Our muzzleloader season is always in late Dec and it gets pretty cold in Ohio

I'll take a TC Encore anyday of the week nowdays ;) Long range and dead accurate

BTW...what oz size ball and how many grains are you shooting?

Good Luck!

Dude I am not sure of the weight of the Hornady Round balls. I use the .530 ball , prelubed patch (no thickness on package  )and 60-70 grains of blackpowder for the best accuracy. I am still experimenting with the conicals for the best load. So far 90 Grains behind the Hornady "Great Plains" 425 Grain Hollow Point/Hollow base seems pretty accurate(only fired 5 rounds of these last trip) but I will keep creeping the powder load up until I see accuracy start to go down. I want to maintain as much muzzle energy as I can when working up hunting loads. This is the first time in 30 years I have used prelubed patches. I normally lube my own and have tried everything from spit to bacon grease.  but I really like the Hoppes #9 Blackpowder solvent/lube best. As you lube each patch with that, it cleans the bore out from the previous shot when you seat your fresh round.Cool concept and it makes loading a LOT easier...............John
