Thinkin' about grabbin' a Fulltone Fat Boost to run w/an OCD in front of my Rebel 20 for that extra umph on leads. Any recommendations for a good clean boost and where do would you put it in the chain; first in line or last in line? Current setup is USA Fender Strat>Planet Waves Pedal Tuner>OCDv1>MXR Phase 90>MXR Carbon Copy>Dunlop Cry Baby>Rebel 20?

If you are looking for more gain, put the boost before any OD/Distortions. If you're looking for more volume, put it after. I tend to like to boost an already overdriven amp a little with a little more dirt. I use my OCD to boost the Plexi side of one of my amps for solos.

I'd go Planet Waves Pedal Tuner>Dunlop Cry Baby>MXR Phase 90>boost>OCDv1>MXR Carbon Copy>Rebel 20

If you want it to be a "clean boost", then it should be last in your FX chain. If you put a boost in front of a distortion pedal, it is going to add more dirt to your signal

Noob question, I know, but when you guys talk about the boost being 'last' in your signal chain in order for it to be more of a clean boost, which end is 'last' - the guitar or the amp?

For example, my board is set up as such:

Guitar>Tuner>Envelope Filter>Boost>Overdrive>Delay>Amp

Which end is last?

And, a related question...is this order okay, or does anyone have any suggestions on how I should reconfigure?

put the delay in the fx loop if you have one and put the boost where the delay was. if you have no loop put the boost after the delay.

clean boost can also be used for level boosting in the effects loop. i have used one as a solo boost this way or even to get more poweramp distortion by slamming the poweramp hard and turning the preamp back down to useable volumes. the boost must be clean for this if it makes dirt if any kind its not a good contender for fx loop use.

Thanks...
I do have an fx loop, but it's a pain to run extra cables to my pedalboard and tape them all down, so I just run it in front and it sounds good to me.

So, are you saying that the 'end' of the chain is by the amp, and the 'beginning' of the chain is at the guitar?

your particular chain yes.

if you haven't tried the delay in the loop you should.

i know some guys prefer it up front but the majority use it in the loop and if you haven't compared them give it a shot. delay sounds far better in a loop IMO.

delays in the loop are tons better. worth the extra 2 cables....100% :)

Dont mean to hi-jack this thread but thought it would be interesting to see what you all thought about how I should run my effects into my Renegade. :D Here is what i have:

Wah
Ernie Ball Volume Pedal
Korg Pitch Black Tuner
Tube Screamer
MXR Carbon Copy Delay
Line 6 M9

I do run the Carbon Copy in the FX Loop of the Renegade.

I'm also thinking about getting a Fulltone Fulldrive or the Box of Rock. Im on the fence of which one.

Since you have a Tube Screamer, I'd go for the BOR. What all do you use the M9 for, delays, chorus reverb or do you use the dirt in there too?

Just purchased a used Fulldrive 2 mosfet and I'd say it's like a tube screamer on steroids...great pedal for what it is, same opamp chip as a TS but with more eq sculpting capability. Definitely an overdrive...not at all a gain pedal in the true sense of the word. To my ears it's not as transparent as some of the other fulltone pedals...(I'm a much bigger fan of the OCD coupled with a Fat Boost at this point, hence the thread) If you're interested in the Fulldrive, PM me cuz it's about to go up on ebay.

I use the M9 for mostly Modulation, Pitch Shift, and some Drive/Fuzz effects. Im still trying to tweak alot of the M9 effects to get them to sound right. Havent had much time to lately. I do sometimes use the delay on the M9 just for a slapback effect (Brian Setzer style) but the Carbon Copy running through the loop is my solo delay that i use most of the time. Unfortunately the M9 doesnt have the 4 cable method option.

Yea i have hear the Fulldrive is pretty much a Tubescreamer with a little more options. Right now my Tubescreamer is stock but i have been thinking about sending it off to the the analogman mod. Im just wanting to get another dirt/OD pedal to add some different colors and also to add some gain for leads. Maybe i should just get the Fulldrive or BOR instead of sending off my Tubescreamer? Hmmmmm. Way to many options to spend money lol
