any of you number crunchers figured up how much more your spending vs a year or two ago?

gave a 5% raise to a guy after his first year, and he acted like i'd kicked him in the teeth. so i don't know if i'm too low or he's got delusions of grandeur? other than showing up on time, he really doesn't have much going for him, but figure he atleast deserved a cost of living increase.

his pay is allready on the higher end for area, experience, and occupation. so i don't know if he's moping around because he's starving to death or if he's just being unreasonble thinking he should suddenly jump up to the level of the guys with several years of experience?

Typical cost of living increase is about 3.5%. I got a 5.5% increase this year and felt pretty good.

a 5% cost of living raise most people only wish they get.....some get no raise at all and others get around 3 to 3.5%...he should be very thankful

Depends on several things.

Do you have an incentive program in place? What line of work are you in? Is the guy a douchebag? :D

5% is pretty good...going on 5 years with no cost of living increase here

Seems to me he's lucky to get the 5%. Shit with the job market the way it is he's lucky to have a job.

For me, a 5% raise isn't even enough to pay for the rising cost of gas this year....

Of course I only make $12.86 an hour, so 5% aint shit....... BUT it's better than a kick in the balls. :D

I was happy with the 5% i got last year. It helped, esp since interest has gone up the last year.

FWIW

Let me quote the owner of the company (multi-million dollar Industrial Controller Electronix Manufacturer) I worked several years for -

"Well, Everyone knows how poorly the economy is here in OHIO so I have some good news and bad news.

The BAD news - No Raises again this year

The GOOD news - theres more than enough overtime (60 +hrs per week) to go around.

If any of you don't like it, right theres the door leave !"

Thats a Direct Quote !!

I put up with that BS for 6 years before I left (its been 2 years ago now) and in that time everyone in the company saw only two merit/cost of living raises (3% one year and 2.5% right before I left).

BTW, most the people I worked with are still there to this day !!

thanks for the replies guys!

he's acting a little better now, so he must thought it out some and decided it wasn't so bad after all?

we'd just lost a guy with 9 years experiance, so i think this guy thought he was instantly gonna jump way up in pay. he's having to learn lots of new stuff, so think he's maybe figuring out he didn't know as much as he thought.

glad to hear he figured it out... Ive been working at this place for almost 5 years and the biggest raise I havent gotten so far was 3.5%.

+1

Seriously don't be a cunthole about it if you don't feel your raise is what you deserve. If you think you deserve more for some reason(s), then use those that as selling points to your boss as to why you should have received more. Being a sour-puss pussy gets you nowhere except a free membership to the Losa's Club of America :gethim:

I got a 1.5% raise this year, and I bust my ass every day. I'd kill for 5%. Only thing you can do is ask him what's wrong. Maybe there's something else going on in his life that's difficult to ignore at work?

And things ARE a lot more expensive. Lets do some math:

According to http://www.eia.doe.gov/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/wrgp/mogas_home_page.html, gas in the Midwest (where I live) went up $.635/gallon over 2007. To and from work is a 20 mile drive for me. My car averages 26MPG (thanks to shitty Illinois driving). I get around 300 miles before I fill up (and whether or not I'm taking a chance depends on how nice I've driven) my 13 gallon tank. So that's about 17 tanks of gas per year if I say I worked 250 days. Might as well add on another seven tanks for getting groceries, visiting friends, etc.

In 2007 it cost me ~$36.50 to fill up. That multiplied by 24 = $876 in gas per year. It currently costs 3.45/gallon, which = 44.85/tank = $1076.40/year. That's about an extra $200/year. I fudged a lot of numbers for the sake of me being lazy, but I think you get the picture.

Now, keep in mind that that is *just* gas costs for *me*. Imagine how much more it goes up for the semi drivers that are bringing food and other necessities to the grocery store. And there is talk of $5/gallon gas in the not too distant future.

I got 5.5% this year. That was a combined merit/promotion.
