Hello,

So I've decided to purchase a UPS and ditch my old furman power supply. After doing a show a while back where the power cut 4 times the icing on the cake was last week when my power plug was pulled out of socket twice by accident, causing my Herbert to shut down without a proper shut down procedure.

So my question is, when buying a UPS, what watts should I be buying?

I want one like this:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... tresources

As you can see this is the 400 watt one, they make quite a few different ones. If the Herbet is a 180 watt head and I have a GSystem, ISP Decimater, and X2 Wireless all plugged into this UPS, will 400 be good? Is it too much? Would 300 watts be better, or 600? I'm confused! I know they say too much power isn't a good idea and neither is too little. All of the charts they offer are based on using this item for a PC and not for music gear...

Thanks in advance for any help!!

I don't understand why you wanna spend so much money for a thing like this.

If the power cuts out, your amp won't take damage. The problem occurs when the power comes back on. Herbie will be switched to "Run" mode without pre-heating the tubes- even if they're already warm from playing the amp before, it's not nice to give them high voltage right away, that's why the amp has that switch.
But what do you need that UPS for? You can't hear the bass player, keyboard player, singer, monitors or PA. Or does your band consist only of you and a LOUD drummer?

Sometimes I'm wondering if you guys have too much money ;)

Just kidding, but seriously- save the bucks for something more useful!

^seems to me that the UPS would still negate the impact of the power coming back on when not in stand-by. You are right though, everything eles is going to be out (unless its the case of a pulled plug - in which case you probably wouldn't know the plug was pulled) so it's not like you are going to be continuing to play.

I don't think it's really that much more money. I paid $120 for the Furman, the UPS isn't that far from it. We are in the Diezel forum right? I did pay how much for one of those?!?! :D

I wasn't worried about staying on if the power went out to continue playing, I was just worried about everything in my rack and my head shutting down without powering down correctly. I have a roadcase this would be in that also has the following stuff I listed above, I just feel it might be an extra precaution. I spent easily 7k on my entire rig so I don't think running it all through a 2-3 hundred dollar power conditioner is that ridiculous. I haven't been impressed that much with the Furman, I lost the cover to both of my dimming lights which fell off and are cheaply made to begin with and are also almost completely worthless. It's supposed to be the top of the line one but I think it's a huge POS personally. For the one show I was talking about, everything in my rig shutting off and coming back on 4 times in a row, that couldn't have been good for it. Yes nothing happened YET, I've also run the head without a load and done other stuff that could damage it, just trying to be extra careful.

So back to the question, does anyone know which sized one I would need?

Thanks in advance for your help :)

There's always a power requirement written on the amp and all other devices. Find these and add them. That's how you find out the amount of watts your rig is really consuming.

By the way, "shutting down properly" is NOT the problem. It's turning on a tube device without pre-heating that will cause tube wear, but nothing else.
Shutting off by blowing a fuse isn't different from turning off power buttons on your rack gear.
That is the reason for my disbelief in the urgent need for a UPS.
The tubes won't go dead, or did they? It's just one more thing to carry around in your rack- believe me.
