Didn't you have a Bogner XTC? I thought I read that. I have the Bogner OS 2x12 w/ V30s. Which of my modules (EG3/4, EG5, MHG) would get me closest to the XTC crunch and lead tones? If you sat down with my rig, which module and what settings would get me there? I've got the 2 Moderns with either DSH/DSV or DSH+/DSV pups.

Thanks.

Dave

He never owned an XTC... and he's actually a proctologist.

Sorry I would have been here sooner, but I was having a "private consult" with my nurses.

First of all Im a gynecologist. Second of all I never had an XTC. I did have an SLO, but thats probably not really relevant to this discussion.

But, I have played a few XTCs in my day and from your list Id have to say probably MHG, but make sure you get some chinese 12AX7B preamp tubes and its not going to really be THAT close. EG3/4 actually probably has a closer voicing, but its just too smooth and doesnt have any of that Bogner GRIND. So, Id say probably MHG.

The closest to date Ive heard is GnR for whatever thats worth.

Thanks Matt. I've always heard the XTC was dark and smooth so I'd have thought 3/4.

Can I put my pants back on now doc?

Dave

Listen to James Lugo's amp shootout, Frazolli. You'll hear that the XTC really isn't *that* dark compared to some other amps.

This YouTube video is, in my opinion, the most real representation of what an XTC sounds like in person.

I did listen to them and I agree that it doesn't sound that dark in the clip. That kind of surprised me.

Jesus Christ that sounds incredible.

That's very close to what I get out of my EG3/4 or MHG. I run a Bogner OS 2x12 w/ V30s. In fact, last night, I was setting up a new PC and while I waited for crap to install I sat with my self built guitar into the EG3/4 and was having one of those nights where it just sounded great. Very much like this clip.

Very cool. I love those times when you plug in and everything is just RIGHT. I didn't hear this at all out of Nick's EG3/4, but its definitely cool if you are getting it!

Ah Matt, but you haven't heard my EG3/4 lately.... I've done a few tweaks to it... ;)

It's very funny, different people's impressions of the XTC. Some say it's dark. I think it just has more lower-mids than what people are used to. But, then you listen to the Randall XTC module, and that thing sounds NOTHING like an XTC. It's almost a cartoon-characiture of what an XTC sounds like, if that makes any sense.

Id describe it as subdued sub-bass frequencies, super tight bass, very strong low mids, chewy mids, and a very articulate, pleasantly stringy top end.

My thing with the Bogner was more about the feel of the amp. It has a certain sag to it that affects the way you play--in a good way imo. I wouldn't call it dark either but because it doesn't respond so stridently like a Marshall, I think it impacts the overall perception of the tone. The Esctasy can get damn bright if you want it there. Speakers play a huge role in this too.
When I owned the Bog I loved it and would love to have another someday. As soon as I can break this Egnater habit...

I would have to agree that it's a good representation of the tone of an XTC. Especially that XTC. I actually own that amp.

 Nice playing dude and sick tone!!!

I can't take credit for the playing. Turns out that after he made those clips he put the amp up for sale and I bought it. The clip is a really good representation of the tone I get on the red channel. I pretty much live on the blue channel but use red for a lot of my solos. It's been awhile since I've had a mod 50 but I remember the sl2 could get in the ballpark of the xtc blue channel depending on how it was set up or how the xtc was set up for that matter. The XTC always has this mid thing going on that you either like or you don't. I sometimes have a love/hate with it myself. The thing the XTC does do is sit well in a live mix. Just by using the pre eq's you can shift the mid range a bit. B1 seems to accentuate low mids and tightens up the low end where B2 gives you a bit more lows and highs and a more natural midrange. There are so many different tones in the XTC with the different gain structures, boosts, pre eq's, excursion, and especially the presence control. With that said, I can't wait for the renegade to come out! If it lives up to my expectations the XTC may get a well deserved rest!!!
