Anyone know how the Duncan Custom would sound ? The stock pup in my strat is way too hot and really harsh in the mids. Any recommendations will be appreciated.

I have an SD Custom in my American Deluxe Fat Strat and it sounds great to me.

Here's a clip of the Strat and my F-100:

The semi clean parts are from the neck single coil, with the amp set the same as the solo part which is the SD Custom. As far as higher-gain and metal, I think the Custom is just right.

I have a JB in the bridge of my strat, splits well too, but I think you may like the less mids of the Duncan custom. You might look at putting an Alnico 8 magnet in for the ceramic magnet to make it a bit smoother...

Bob Savage did some clips with a custom, maybe comparing it to a distortion? or maybe the one on his Doug Roccoforte JMP? or both?

anyways, do some searching.

Thanks for all the replies. I just went ahead and ordered the Custom. I have used it in a Les Paul and an Explorer and liked it in both. I was just a bit leary about putting it in alder. So we will see.......

In my Alder GMW strat it sounded very punchy, focussed, and clear! Not mega hot, but hot enough no problem!

The Rio Grande BBQ sounds really nice in mine. It is a FAT pafish type sound.
I see you already ordered a SDC, but I`d have the BBQ in the back of my head. I very satisfied with it, and they deserve their good rep :)

Can the Rio grande do heavier/tighter sounds as well as the classic PAF sounds? Ive got another Musikraft charvel type made of ash, and im starting to look about for a more PAF type pickup than the Aldrich ive got in my other strat.

If I manage to get the Aldrich before GAS gets the better of you, I`ll try to give them a comparison in my Strat. The BBQ is definitely able to do heavy stuff, I used it in a RG 507 some 7-8 years ago, and this was with a Metallica tribute band. In my Strat, I have a 250kohm potmeter, and it is able to do death metal with the right amp settings :)
