I picked up one of these last week, in pretty much mint condition and I have to say, as far as bang for the buck goes, these things are real good high gain amplifiers.
No, not as refined or quite as tight as some of the high dollar Amplifiers we talk about often around here, but if you have the chance to grab one of these for a half decent price, Just do it.
If you’ve never played one, you’ll be very surprised.
A nice stock JCM 800 is selling for what, $2-2500 right now, And you can grab one of these for much less than half that, it’s a better amplifier in my opinion, at least for high gain without a pedal.
If I were only allowed to take my JCM 800 or this amplifier to that Desert island, No Boost pedals, this would win.
If these things were a ‘Marshall’, made back in the 90s, and not currently in production, I believe people would be paying easily 2k for these now…
It does take some tweaking with the 8 DIP switches, so there is lots of fine-tuning to get to your tone, if you take the time, you will find it.
I don’t know the whole story, many of you guys probably know exactly what the history is, but I understand that it was made by James Brown, from a Jose Modded Marshall Superlead owned by the guy that played in Keel, Reportedly one of the best sounding Jose Modded Marshalls around at that time.
( I might have some of this wrong, so correct me if I do )
Anyways, a very underrated, still somewhat under the radar, beast of an amplifier, tons of useable gain, lots of fun!
I was somewhat hesitant to buy one without trying it which is basically what I had to do, (when I watched Kyle‘s video, it sounded loose in the lower end), but mine is pretty darn tight, maybe a preamp tube or something was haywire with his, I’m not sure, but it’s not at all flubby when set up properly, and still has lots of low end.
Our resident, Bubbastain swears by these amps and he’s right.
So far, I have to say, I prefer this amplifier over my block logo 5150.
I only wish it I had 34’s instead of 6L6’s,
But that’s just my personal taste…
I play through this thing and I just shake my head thinking how much money we spend on hi end boutique Amplifiers…
Is a new wizard worth nine times as much as this thing? No way.
But, obviously, the rule of ‘diminishing returns’ comes in to play, and we pay a lot more money for that last 10%?
… Presently looking for a new lighter head so as this thing is stupid heavy.

Hmm. Yours must be a special one; since the 2 I had were ok but in no way better than an 800. I had the 60 and the 120. Cool amps and versatile with the dip switches…but I thought overall somewhat like the MiG amps out of Russia they were like 70% there. I did send one out for a ‘mod 5’ modification and it came back better..he changed the filtering so it was a bit more punchy in the power section.
Congrats though! If yours sounds that good I wonder if anything’s changed under the hood.

Have a fortin modded one that crushes, amazing amp. Stock ones can sound amazing.

Yes, it’s not a wizard or a JMP, but it’s a cheap amplifier, and I’m just saying that as far as ‘high gain’ goes, it has much more than a stock 800…
I really didn’t think it would be this good, bro.
Maybe I had really low expectations, I don’t know… But it’s a darn good sounding Amplifier for the money!
What is the MOD 5 you had done bro?

only thing I have heard about the vtm is that they are loud as all get out. Also wondering how tough the mod is EL34s. The peavey ultra plus I serviced a while back had the power tube board riveted in. :(

That’s the Rockstah mod…couple resistors and a second MV. Pretty cool tone.
I don’t doubt your amp; you have some great ones now. I’ll bet your VTM smokes the 2 I owned.
Oh, and I do remember the headshell being so heavy, with that ‘armor plated’ cover….thing would easily survive a nuclear war

These things used to be dirt cheap but everyone started realizing what they were and the prices are like triple now.

Ahhhh yes the Rockstah?
So, did it affect the dip switches or available gain? Or did it mostly smooth out the eq curve a bit…

It’s been awhile but I believe the dip switches still worked; the tone became a little warmer and the 2nd master allows the power section to cook at a lower volume

I agree with your assessment 100 percent.
I bought a vtm 120 a couple years ago.
I was impressed.
For the money it is very hard to beat.

Yes, got to admit, bro…

my initial excitement was a bit of the ‘surprise’ as I wasn’t expecting much from the VTM, it is a very bright amplifier and not as smooth as the 800…
The one thing though, I definitely need some boost (SD-1 / TC BLD) in front of the 800 for a nice tight high gain tone, but with this thing you don’t need it.
Great Amplifier for the money…?

Yeah people have caught on recently but you used to be able to get them all day for 150-350.

I love the VTM and I wish Peavey would reissue it.

There was a old beat up 60 on my Craigslist for $200 I happened to see right after the guy posted it, I sent him an email saying I would take it and I was free that night if he wanted to meet, I guess he took “I’ll take it” as I thought he was gonna give it to me for free and went a long rang about assholes and other assholes like me trying to pull that shit, I politely wished him luck on his sale lol. Kinda wish I grabbed it though

Thx man, I appreciate the honest insight.
It's posts like these that are very helpful
for a guitarist and 'learns' them
that the proof is in the pudding.
Cheers!

These are an underrated gem. You used to be able to pick them up for 2 or 3 bills, but people are catching on and the prices are going up.

As napalm said, the Laney GH series is another "800esque" amp that you can pick up relatively cheap.

Personally, the VTM low end is a little too loose for me, but that's all subjective preference. Even at the prices they're at right now, they're a good value.

The VTM was Peavey’s answer to the modded Marshalls of the day; those dip switches allowed for lots of variation

Yes, it’s not a Dino or a Wizard, but I have found, if I use the Gain II, Comp and Low I & II dips, I keep the gain at around noon, and the EQ pretty close to noon all the way across, and it’s pretty darn tight.
…And sings for days?

Great value for the money anyways, bro. it’s a fun high gain Tube Amplifier for cheap money!
