I made a modification to the Gryphon design so that when its gain boost is used, it sounds more modern/aggressive. This is in response to people inquiring about the WarHawk over the last year. I'd considered bringing back the WarHawk but the problem is that depending on a person's point of view it might not be considered "high gain enough" for their tastes. The Chimera was supposed to replace the WarHawk but some people felt perhaps they wanted a warmer sounding high gain amp without the obvious modern aggression slant of the Chimera. The Gryphon (as of 2007) already had a bit more gain/saturation on tap than the WarHawk had but the Gryphon wasn't voiced to be as "modern". So with this mod, now the Gryphon can definitely be considered a suitable replacement for the WarHawk (as well as doing the job it always did, which makes it a very versatile design).
Here's the clip:
The pickup I used was an old JB that I put a ceramic magnet into, but it doesn't really sound like a Duncan Distortion. The closest thing it sounds like is the Dimarzio D Activator (EMG-like for smoothness, somewhat bright, strong but not "rip your face off" for output). Guitar is an Ibanez SZ320.
Preamp tubes are Sovtek 12AX7WC.
Output tubes are SED 6550.
The speaker is a Vintage 30.
The pick was a green "Tortex" Dunlop 0.88mm, with my signature wear pattern (I hate new picks).
The strings are D'Addario 9-42, and are far from new.
The cables are ones I made myself out of average parts.
The socks I wore were made in China.
More clips of this coming soon.
