What kind of picks are you guys using?

Just got turned onto some Dunlop Jazz III Ultrex picks and love em.

The attack and feel are super responsive.

YES...love the Ultex. I usually only use fingers and nails, but if I have to use picks, I only use the little jazz size ones, and for a long time I've only used the tortex jazz green ones. I get the best tones out of the red jazz III's (the older ones like Eric Johnson likes), but they slip out of my fingers too easily, so I usually use the tortex ones which are a great compromise. The Ultex seem to be a cross between the two. They aren't quite as slippery as the regular jazz IIIs, but they aren't quite as "grippy" as the tortex's, and the tone is somewhere in the middle to me...a great middle ground. I like them a lot.

Used to use Jazz III's until someone on Rig-Talk mentioned Cool-Picks, now I am a full time cool picks heavy 1.5mm user now

I've used black Jazz III for years now and I like the feel and tone of those picks. However, I would like to try some new picks maybe some with better grip. Are Cool-Picks CoolCats somewhat similar to Jazz III's? I'd like to find something that is only a little bit different from Jazz III's, not totally different.

The cool-picks are larger than the Jazz III's, but I felt the Jazz III were a bit too small and these are much more comfortable. When I first tried the coolpicks I immediately switched back to Jazz III but then I tried them out again and now prefer the Cool-Picks.

I just use the Dunlop Green Tortex. Ibanez picks are awesome though; the ones with the round sandpapery grip and sharp point.

The Dunlop EJ picks are my favorite......great pick!

SOmeone on RT turned me onto Black Jazz IIIs....I also tried the Ultex....but have stuck with the IIIs ever since..they rock.

I was using tiny stiff Fender picks, which I still do sometimes..but they're slippy and small...and the stubby picks (2.5, 3mm maybe?)....which are fun because they're so stiff and have a unique plink when ya hot the string

Ive tried dozens of different kinds of picks and I always come back to the tone and feel of the red Jazz III's.

+1

I am long-time user of the Jazz III, both red and black. I checked out the Ultex version and I really like them. Great response and tone.

I just picked up some Red and Black Jazz III to try out as well.
To my ears the Red Jazz III are a little brighter, and the Black Jazz III are a little darker than the Ultex Jazz III.
Great but simple way to slightly change your tone!

A buddy of mine sands down the point real sharp and man can he shred on the Dimeola type stuff.

He says it allows more accuracy and increases his speed substantially.
They wear out fast ten he resands

To me, I think the tip lasts a little longer on the Ultex than the red or black. Could just be me. Of course, I usually put at least one pick a day in my pocket and it gets washed, dried and ends up in the lint filter, bottom of the washer/dryer or on the floor. My wife hates that....She has quite a collection of picks now. She could sell them back to me and make a small fortune. :D

Sanding is too much like work. I just wanna play! :m17:

The Ultex Jazz III is almost indestructable....they last forever and are very easy to play!

You guys should really check out the Dunlop Eric Johnson Jazz III picks....they are made with the same materials dunlop used in the beginning and they have a sharper point....to my ear they sound much different than the current production red Jazz III.

YES...I love them. IF you can find them...

The history of picks I used -

Green tortex jazz
Black pointy Jazz III
Stubby 3.0mm
V-pick jazz.

The v-picks aren't cheap; I think they run around $4 apiece. I like them the best of anything I've used though. They have the smoother tone of the stubbies (which is why I switched over to the stubbies), but they stick to your fingers better.

Obviously, alot of love for Jazz III, but I have found that they make my tone very cold and clinical sounding. I get much warmer, rounded tone from Tortex. I love the "action" with a Jazz III, but the tone difference to me is night and day. The other guitar player in my band heard the same thing, but to each his own.

Matt,

Are you referring to the Tortex Jazz III picks?

I didnt know there were Tortex Jazz IIIs! That I am interested in. I didnt like the tone from the black and red original nylon Jazz IIIs. And I used them for YEARS too, until I checked out regular Dunlop Tortex one day and couldn't believe my ears. I dont think the tone problem was with the shape of the Jazz III, but rather the nylon material. The Jazz IIIs were noticably brighter and more "clinical" sounding. If there is a Tortex version I will have to check those out because I loved the shape, but couldnt deal with tone once I heard the Tortex.

I've used the Tortex Jazz III's for at least 10 years.
Definitely my favorite pick.
I bought them originally just because somebody said in a Guitar mag interview that he played them.
Give 'em a shot!
