I just got an Ibanez S470DXQM, I like the way it plays and I like the ZR Trem on it but the pickups are shit. I have a credit at a local music store that only carries Seymour Duncan so I'm going to use my credit for pickups. The body on this guitar is mahogany with RW/maple neck. I've got a JB/Jazz in a guitar already so I want something different. Any one have the Lynch Screamin Demon? How do you like it? Or any suggestions on something that will go good with the guitar. Metal and rock/80's hair is the music I dig. The guitar is a H-S-H pickup so if you know a good middle single that would be great! Thanks for any help!

I have not tried the screamin' demons. I've used Duncans in the past and my favorite combinations were Custom 5 Bridge/'59 Neck or a Custom Custom Bridge/'59 Neck. The custom custom is a warmer sounding pickup so in a mahogany guitar the custom 5 may be a little better (depending on the sound you're after). That's actually my favorite duncan pickup, it's not super high output, kind of like a beefed up '59, they blend really well. I'm not really familiar with their single coils but just by looking at their specs. I'd personally go with a SSL-3.

id also recommend the custom 5 (sh-5) and the 59 combo. for a maple neck, it really mixes well in all EQ range of the woods, plus the mahogany will really give that awsome openness.

with mahogany you could almost do an sh-6 distortion, which is basically the JB with a different magnet, but that is one hell of a hot pickup, might get too muddy down low.

the sh-6 is also what lynch used to use back in his hay-days.

its the pickup i put in my charvel and it screams. from a tonal perspective i highly recommend the pickup itself either way

as for a killer single coil, i cant recommend anything that is SD. i like alot of dimarzio pickups as well for the neck/centre positions myself.

Ya, the Custom 5 is one of my favorites. I have one in the bridge of my Hamer, along with a '59 in the neck and it sounds great! I have a Screamin' Demon in my Peavey V-Type and like it alot. Great pinch harmonics!

bare knuckle cold sweat

the screamin dmon is a good pickup, though
just a bit too scooped and peaky

The custom 5 has great reviews and it does sound the best on Duncans site, it looks like it will be the 5 & 59, still working on a good match for the middle. Thanks for the opinions!

I do not like the SD at all. It has this really weird squeeky high end that's impossible to dial out. It doesn't sound very natural to me.

As far as Duncans go, the Custom 5 is great! My personal favorite of the Duncan line for a bridge pickup.

That's exactly how I remember the SD. There's so many other great options besides Seymour Duncan, unless that's what you want.

I had a Screamin Demon and hated it. I think the Custom 5 kills it.

The music store I have the credit at, does'nt have anything I want and they carry Duncans so I figure I'll just get the pickups there.

I had a demon in one of my guitars and i liked it, its bright and doesnt have the output or lowend of alot of pickups but it works good with a dark sounding guitar. most people hate the demon but i dont mind it, i also played a few lynch esp that had it and thought it was ok in those.

I did not care for the SD, it did not seem very balanced, wasent very smooth. the top was more pronounced than the bottom. When I used that guitar it required very diff eq settings from my others :aww:

There was a recent thread on the Duncan Forums, and everyone basically admitted that the name "Screamin' Demon" is a huge misnomer, because the output is not really high.

It's a 10K pickup, but wound with 43AWG wire, so it's pretty bright and scoopy.

The Custom 5 is a great pickup, very balanced, great output, like a louder 59.

The Custom has a ceramic, but it is not harsh at all, very powerful. One of the best duncans out there for sure. Big bass, thick mids, crunchy highs.

It's true, the Custom has a ceramic magnet, but the Custom 5 is a Custom with an alnico 5 magnet.

I like the Demon...
But preffer the JB over it for 80's style metal.
Just my 2 cents!

I flippin' HATED the semen Demon. Imagine a '59 with everything you liked taken away.

It just goes, "doink, doink, doink" when one plays it.

Seriously, It's the worst after market pickup ever made.

ever get that PATB working?

:aww: so, the replacement baseplate has these bigger stripped out holes. Great way to spend like another $15.

SO, long story short, no.

It's sitting on my tray of 50 pickups to do something with. :(
