Post band practice: the Orange Super Crush 100 rules!!!

I had a band practice today with my loud drummer and loud bass player and the Orange Super Crush 100 combo did not disappoint!! Was extremely impressed.

As a point of reference, I've been using an EVH 5150-III stock 6L6 or 5150-III 6l6 stealth into an EVH 1x12 or 2x12 or Friedman 1x12 since 2020. The Orange actually did not sound too far removed from the tone I've been used to.

I expected a harshness and to be noticing the solid state feel but I swear, I did not feel that. It felt like I was playing thru a tube amp. I used my Keeley D&M as a boost but to be honest, I could have probably turned it off and been fine. I like that little extra cut that I get. Sounded killer.

I had the treble at about 1 o'clock, mids at 10 o'clock, and bass at around 2 o'clock. I had the master and channel volume at noon so definitely had more room if I had needed it.

I'm impressed. Impressed enough that I will be using this as my main rig. Opinions vary, so people might not like the tones, etc but for me, I've been surprised. I've been playing since 85' and have had tons of amps. I expected to use this as a backup and didn't think it would sound as full as it does. For a solid state combo, it is impressive IMO.
 
I have a Orange OR50 and two PPC112 cabs. Played on a Rockerverb 100 MK III and PPC412 today . I really like the Orange sound. As much as the Hiwatt and Marshall sounds.

My experience with the solid state amps is they are excellent.

Steve Fryette said he could build a solid state amp that sounds as good as any of the tube amps. But no one would buy it because it doesn't have tubes.

Excellent to hear you are getting results that work for you.

Me too! I think I always thought they were made for doomy, stoner type stuff. I had play3d one briefly in a store and that was it. Is the OR50 a 50 watt solid state?

I made the right choice with the combo, it was easy to carry, speaker already plugged in, etc. I gotta be honest though, would kick ass to get a head with a 4x12, lol. Their 4x12 was cheap.
 
The OR50 is tube. It is the discontinued reissue of the head they designed for Jimmy Page. It was the the 40th Anniversary of Orange in 2008 and Led Zeppelin was doing the O2 show. The reissue came out in 2012. My roommate at the time bought it and the two 1x12 cabs. I bought the rig off him last year. But had used it many times over the years.
It's a bit more vintage Orange voice than some of the other amps. But can get very modern and aggressive with the Gain up above 1 o'clock and the Punch knob turned up.

Orange has made a lot of great amps over the years.

Some of the Orange amps including mine can get into the fuzz range of overdrive. I think that is why Orange is associated with certain styles. But they do way more than that.


Looking at the modern distortion pedals that come out now I am kind of surprised we don't see more solid state amps. They are capable of more aggression and gain than tubes after all.

I think it goes thru these waves of solid state, then tube, etc. and companies are trying to always push the envelope.

The thing that shocked me about the Orange is that I was expecting a bit boxy, solid state type of tone, etc. I mean, I'm older so when I think solid state combo, I'm remembering my Fender M-80 or other amps I had back in the day. To plug I to this after my EVH 5150-III rig and not cringe, was great. It isn't beamy or spikey like the BOSS Katana was and I liked that amp.

I have the CR120 head and 1x12 Orange speaker cab and I know it's a generation back from yours, but it'll go.
 
I like how thick the distortion is on Orange amps. They sound great. I wish they had the ability to shape the amount of cut you want in the preamp. It looks like the new OR30 lets you do this with a bright switch toggle. A higher headroom version would be great.

Hey it's good enough for Ty Tabor and that guy always get good tones.
 
I only got to jam on a CR120 one time but one sound in it I really liked, was the dirty channel with the gain below 12’Oclock and the amp’s plate reverb setting up a bit and it just seemed to nail the first Black Sabbath album tone.

Its the same Super Crush you just got. It sounds killer live, there are a bunch of YT vids of them with him using them. Massive sounding, even with the tunings he uses now. Loop is supposedly great too. Sounds great at lower volumes too from what Ty said about it. He loves those amps!
The gain in the Super Crush amps is different from any of the other amps they make, the guy that designed it did a great interview on the process that ended up being that amp. Cant remember his name

Oh man that is awesome! I can vouch that it sounds amazing at low or high volumes. Man, I might need to get a 4x12 and head down the road, lol.

You mention how they sound different and that is why I never tried the Orange amps. Don't get me wrong, I love Sabbath tones, etc, but I like hard rock tones and this amp does it for sure.
 
There's alot of great sounding SS amps, the Super Crush among them.

along with the ampeg, randall, etc of the world

the problem isnt just that they dont have tubes, its that if they break they're landfill junk - they are unrepairable. So no one will spend big $ on one.

I think what I love about this one is that going from my 5150-III to the Orange or Orange to the 5150-III, the sound is not so drastic. Since it had a lot of saturation, for my needs, it works perfectly. For me, it allows me to have another tool in the arsenal, instead of dumping one. I can keep all and use all. When I had the Katana, I didn't touch it because it couldn't come close to the feel I got with my tube amps.
