I have had a few pm's in the past 6 months asking for what settings I use.
Thought it would be cool to share and try everyone's settings.

Here's what is working for me right now, I use a LPC with a JB SH4 in front

VH4
Channel 3/Deep and Presence

Pretty interesting choice on the herbert. I never have my treb up that high but i never have the channel volume that low on channel 2 either... I'm gonna try that out and see how it suites me.

Ya know, I tried putting the channel volume up and master volume lower, I find that by switching it the other way around I get a better tone.

Remember, I am running the VH4 with it at the same time...If I were using the Herbert alone, I'd be using channel 3 not 2.

Using Channel 2 herb with Channel 3 VH4 is :m9:

You seem to have a very tight cabinet with such high bass and deep settings

My settings are odd when compared to most diezel users
Ch 3 vh4
Bass 10:30
Mids 2:00
Treb 11:00
Volume 11:00
Deep 10:00
Presence 11:30
Master what ever i can get away with lol

Like lots of mids but as i play lower gain settings the mids could be to punchy if i dial them to high
I like mine set raw gain than high gain
I have a bright guitar so dial the amps top end a bit darker

My herbert settings are channel 2+
gain: 12
vol: 13
treble: 12
mid: 12
bass: 13
midcut: on
intensity: 8
level: 12
presence: 11
deep: 13

I'm going to try some of u guys settings...their is just so many great tones in the amp , hard to settle on 1 setting for me ...seems like no matter where I twist the knobs it sounds killer.

My Herbert settings:

Chan1. No highs, everything else noon

Chan 2+ Everything noon, gain about 3/4

Chan 3 Everything noon, gain about 3/4 also

MID CUT on both level & intensity, noon

Deep & Presence, Noon
Master to taste. Voilà. I think it's "out of the box" settings ;)

Herbert:

CH1: treble 4 / mids 6 / bass 6

CH2+: gain 6 / treble 4 / mids 7 / bass 5

CH3: gain 4 / treble 3 / mids 6 / bass 5

MID CUT: always on / intensity 2 / level 6

presence 6 / deep 4

VH4:

CH1: gain 4 / treble 7 / mids 4 / bass 7 / bright off

CH2: gain 6 / treble 6 / mids 6 / bass 7 / bright off

CH3: gain 6 / treble 5 / mids 7 / bass 6

CH4: gain 4 / treble 3 / mids 8 / bass 4

presence 7 / deep 6

I'm digging this post...

I prefer set Chanel volume at 12H, and lower the master volume.

Oh really?
With my Blueface I have the masters at noon and the channel lower and it slays!!!!
Sounds much more open that way. IMO

I always liked running the overall volume high and taming it by running the channel volumes lower. Very different sounding amp when run the other way around. Different stokes, I guess.

I totally get that "good tone" is a very subjective label.. but these tone-settings threads always leave me feeling perplexed. There is a part of my brain that understands the motivation..kindof, but every time someone's settings use arguably high "Bass" and "Deep" settings.. I just can't imagine it sounding good. Anyone? Just me?

It could be the recording-engineer part of my head, but High-Gain guitar tracks tend to have low end filtered out (almost as a rule) because otherwise they sound muddy, or take up too much room or more importantly: because those low frequency are what the Bass Guitar is for...
According to the user manuals, the "Deep" control is a shelving EQ for 120Hz and below.. I just never see a need to boost that low.

Live or in Studio, my Bass and Deep controls are always at or below the Noon position.
If I use a 1x12 for at-home practicing, I might get Deep around 11 o'clock or Noon.
In studio, with a 4x12: Deep at 9 o'clock ~ 10.5 (Diezel FL 4x12 w/ G12K100)
Live with a Marshall 1960 Lead straight cab that I don't mind abusing: I turn the Deep OFF.. ALL THE WAY OFF. (Which to me always sounds mud-free, cuts awesome, and lets our bass player also sound clear and great.)

Is it really just me? Maybe I'm off-the-wall?

-Steve

As an added detail, keeping the Deep down that far sounds good to me using all 3 of the guitars/tunings I'm using live:
LP or Iceman in Drop-D or standard.
Baritone LP in Drop-B
Baritone LP in Drop Ab (or G# depending on how you'd describe it)

Not everyone mixes like that - Bands like Tool often have the guitar below the bass guitar.

Not sure who I find more annoying. The big-amp police who blindly criticize anyone using something larger than 40 watts, or folks who loudly insist that all low end be cut from electric guitar. We've all seen how Adam Jones sets his VH4 and no one thinks he's fighting for space with the bassist. Like Stephen said, there obviously are different ways to mix and to eq the bass.

cardinal - He might not be familiar with the other methods - even if people have been doing that for decades. You also need to figure in the whole rig and the type of music being played. What works for one person might not work for someone else.

Personally I use more bass often than most guitar players - but not as much as many. Certainly not all the time. As far as bass players go I do not really like the guys that stay on the bottom. I much prefer they use the whole range of the instrument and use it more like the keyboard / full range.

As far as the wattage police go - To be honest I really can barely tell the difference between a 150 watt amp and a 40 watt amp - other than the headroom. The amount of usable dB's is very similar in most cases. I have amps from 5 watts to 120 watts here and they all have a place. Depending on my needs and taste at the time.
