Power conditioner = just a glorified powerstrip?!

The title says it all... ;)

I've joined the Egnater clan! I bought an M4 and an RT2/50 and I'm going to put them in a rack with A TC G-System and a few pedals. I'll probably also throw in another preamp just for fun...

Right now I'm looking at rackmounted powerstrips and power conditioners, since I want everything mounted neatly in the rack. I haven't ordered the rack yet, so I might as well buy the powerstrip/conditioner at the same time, from the same store.

So, what I'm asking is really, will I benefit from a conditioner or are they just a waste of money?
What are your general opinions on power conditioners? Are the cheaper Furmans/Phonics/Samsons any good or do I need to look at the more expensive ones, comparing the furman M-series to the PL-series for instance?

Thanks!

furman pl-8 is the standard used in rig building.. you can get crazy with regulators and blag blah.. i run a $60 ART 4x4, and have no issues.. its pretty well a glorified rackmount power bar.

I tried the Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2+ for my new pedal board and found it didn't reliably power about half of what I had. A big disappointment. I went with a regular plug track and it works fine.

:D

I use a Monster power 3500. No problems with power or line noise. It is 2 spaces and has a flex light in front (w/dimmer) and back. The Monster 2500 is one space I believe.

Not to be a turbo corksniffer, but I have a JuiceGoose Twelve PAQ, and it has two gigantic transformers, and it weighs 20 lbs or so. It's NOT just a glorified power strip, and, I could hear a positive difference immediately.

BTW, it also powers my 9VAC, 9VDC, 12v, 18v, etc.

AMAZING UNIT.

Of course, they've been discontinued for years.

its also not a power conditioner.. its actually scaling down on the volts, and converting AC to DC.

I know that's what the big, flat tranny and a few rectifiers do.

However, there's another totally differently sized transformer with only main taps. I figured this was for filtering; 120vac->120vac.

Are you super-well versed on this unit, or are you just assuming I was a moron mistaking the conversion abilities for power conditioning?

i was stating that it wasn't a "glorified" powerstrip like the furman and art units.. guess it was just taken the wrong way.

I'm sorry I overreacted. After some research, the 120vac side just has "Multi Stage EMI/RFI Filter", so I'm assuming the 2nd transformer isn't related to the 120 side, and it's just littered with a few caps to do some filtering. :aww:

I have a Furman AR1215II due to some issues I was having with bad power in my apartment. Let's face it we've all played some gigs where the power is less than stellar. Voltage spikes damage equipment. Your power conditioner is supposed to take the brunt of the hit. For $550 I like having the added piece of mind that the $7k in gear I brought in will perform optimally.
