Hey guys, I'm about to buy a rack power supply and I've gt about $200 to spend. I've narrowed it down to 2 units, the Furman PLPlusII and the Monster Pro 2500.

Any opinions on which one is the overall better buy?

I am not a big Monster fan of anything. However I their unit they do have 2 outlets in the front and I like the display readout of the voltage. they also have a jack to plug in a light.

The Furman has the lights built in and the LED readout of the voltage. There is only 1 outlet on the front.

I personally would go with the Furman, unless you need 2 outlets on the front.

I've used Furman since the late '80s / early '90s - I still have my original PL-Plus from back then, and purchased two new PL-Plus IIs over the last year or two.

i've got a furman AR-117 voltage regulator as well as a RP-8L. both are quality units.

I have the Monster 3500 (from Rare Guitar :D ) and a Carvin AC120(around $179). The carvin has a soft start turning the 10 outlets on in a row from 1 sec to 4 sec delay and 2 led white lights. I like the carvin because you can also manually turn on and off any of the ten outlets or just push a button and turn all on instantly and it also shows voltage. The Monster 3500 also does a delay start up and is my favorite. I replaced my furman with the carvin and never looked back. oh the carvin and monster have a thick thick power cord. My 2 cents.

Do <$200 units really regulate the voltage? I've read that only the expensive models really keep the voltage stabilised. The other models are just glorified filters and surge protectors.

The Less than $200 units do not regulate the voltage, they just monitor and filter the AC a bit. They should in theory have more filtering than a power stripe and about the same surge protection. They do wear out over time. After 5 years I get rid of my surge protectors as the MOVs that do the protection have likely failed.

The Furman voltage regulator which is about $400 has taps on the transformer to get your voltage more within range. So it allows you to monitor and adjust to a point.

Check out the Weber Browner if you would like to dial down your voltage a bit and adjust it for less than $100.

I have a alesis powertrip 8 and it will handle 1800 watts also has a digital readout for input voltage. It is pretty nice, I paid $99 for and have not had any problems so far.
just food for thought.
