Someone asked for a run-down of the stuff I used for the guitar tracks on Ta-Da!! (The Power Triplets new record), so hear it is....it turned out a bit more extensive than I had planned, but that's pretty typical of anything I try to do...:

Sassy--Guitar: drip-finished Suhr Classic with a nickel-covered Suhr SSV in the bridge, and two Suhr V60lp's.
Amps: 50w Blankenship Variplex cranked all the way up for the rhythm guitar stuff as well as the solo.
Speakers: A THD 4x12 cab loaded with four THD blue Vintage speakers.
Pedals: I kicked on a Psionic Audio Z2 towards the end of the solo, to give it just a little more vroom.
Other effects: A little bit of Line6 Echo Pro and a Lexicon MPX-1

Burnin' Sulfur--Guitar: Ocean Torquoise Suhr Classic with three V60lp's.
Amps: All of the dirty stuff is the Blankenship cranked. The verse sections are into the first input only, while the middle section is both channels Y-cabled and cranked. The clean, volume swell stuff was done with an original 1965 Twin Reverb.
Speakers: A THD 4x12 cab loaded with four THD blue Vintage speakers for the dirty stuff. The Twin has Jensen C12s in it.
No pedals.
Other effects: Line6 Echo Pro on the dirty stuff; an old Rocktron Intellifex on the clean stuff.

Asian Beauty--Guitar: Black home-made strat with a one-piece maple neck, Callaham vintage-style srat bridge, Suhr DV (bridge) and two Suhr v54 single coils.
Amps: All of the dirty stuff is the Blankenship cranked. The clean bridge-section is the Twin with an old EP3 Echoplex in front of it.
Speakers: A THD 4x12 cab loaded with four THD blue Vintage speakers for the dirty stuff. The Twin has Jensen C12s in it.
No Pedals.
Other effects: Line6 Echo Pro and a Lexicon MPX-1 on the dirty stuff. The afore mentioned Echoplex.

Art Deco Clock--Guitars: drip finished Suhr Classic for most of it; '74 Les Paul Deluxe Gold Top for the one clean run coming into the first 'verse'.
Amps: All of the dirty stuff is the Blankenship cranked. The clean Les Paul run was played through the '65 Twin.
Speakers: A THD 4x12 cab loaded with four THD blue Vintage speakers for the dirty stuff. The Twin has Jensen C12s in it.
Pedals: At the very beginning, and thoughout a lot of the tune, I'm using a ToneFreak Fuzzoctio.
Other effects: No delays. There was a lot of spring reverb from the Twin on that clean thing though.

Waiting for Buster--Guitar: Ocean Torquoise Suhr Classic with three V60lp's.
Amps: Blankenship cranked; clean '66 Twin.
Speakers: A THD 4x12 cab loaded with four THD blue Vintage speakers for the dirty stuff. The Twin has Jensen C12s in it.
Pedals: For the big rock solo at the end, I ran a Psionic Audio 3.14 into the Blankenship all the way up. Mid-way through the solo, I stepped on a KR Music Mega-Vibe, then subsequently a Vox wah that I've modded a little. In case it's not apparent, this was tracked in the room with the amp...very loud!
Other effects: Line6 Echo Pro on the dirty stuff, nothing on the Twin.

JRB---Guitar: '74 Fender Strat with the original electronics.
Amps: Most of the tune is a THD Flexi 50; the solo is a '69 Marshall Super Lead 100.
Speakers: THD was hooked up to a 2x12 cab with THD blue Vintage model speakers. The solo was tracked through a late '60s Marshall 4x12 cab with the orginal 25w Celestions.
Pedals: A Landgraff Dynamic Overdrive was run into the THD with the amp set pretty clean for the main stuff. For the solo, it was a old Arbiter Fuzz Face into a Fulltone Mini Deja Vibe into the Landgraff.
Other effect: Line6 Echo Pro.

Love on Unicorn Mountain
---Guitar: Ocean Torquoise Suhr Classic with three V60lp's.
Amps: '65 Twin for clean; Blankenship with both channels jumped and cranked for the solo.
Speakers: A THD 4x12 cab loaded with four THD blue Vintage speakers for the dirty stuff. The Twin has Jensen c12s.
No Pedals.
Other effects: Echoplex EP-3 for the clean stuff; Line6 Echo Pro on the solo.

There-----Guitar: Drip finished Suhr Classic.
Amps: Dirty stuff is the Blankenship run clean with pedals. Clean stuff is the Twin.
Speakers: A THD 4x12 cab loaded with four THD blue Vintage speakers for the dirty stuff. The Twin has Jensen C12s in it.
Pedals: ToneFreak Abunai 2 and Fuzzoctio; KR Mega Vibe; Fulltone '70 fuzz; Chandler Tube Driver.
Other effects: Line6 Echo Pro.

Warm And Fuzzy---Guitar: Drip finished Suhr Classic.
Amps: Blankenship cranked for dirt; '66 Twin for clean.
Speakers: A THD 4x12 cab loaded with four THD blue Vintage speakers for the dirty stuff. The Twin has Jensen C12s in it.
Pedals: None.
Other effects: Line6 Echo Pro.

Love Theme from The Monks Of Wrath--Guitars: '74 Fender Strat; Ocean Torquoise Suhr Classic with three V60lp's.
Amps: Blankenship cranked; clean '65 Twin.
Speakers: A THD 4x12 cab loaded with four THD blue Vintage speakers for the dirty stuff. The Twin has Jensen C12s in it.
Pedals: KR Mega Vibe on clean guitars at the end.
Other effects: Line6 Echo Pro.

Cheers,

Thanks for the rundown man, awesome CD.

I got a chance to listen to it today through a good system, everybody is just smoking in the playing dept. Great recording / production. I still think Asian Beauty and JRB are my current favorites - especially the drums in Asian Beauty.....Art Deco Clock is another good one

Blankenship huh??

Man that amp has been getting some press lately. Thanks for the run down!

sounds like a heavenly gear line up!
but it means nothing without an able pilot, and fortunately for us, you absolutely are deserving of such tone jewels.

fender amps and jensen speakers are just intoxicating.

i'm ordering up one of them cd's!

I remember being speechless at the end of Tom's drum-take on Asian Beauty! It was his second take, and about a third of the way through the tune I was writing down notes about things I wanted him to remember (that I liked from what he'd played so far) for the next take..then, about two thirds through, I started thinking, "Well, when he finally plays something we (he and I) don't like, I'll have to just edit in the last third on another take, 'cause this is smokin'. When it got to the end and neither of us had stopped the process yet....I was floored by what I'd just heard. Rare that the 'tape' is rolling when that kind of magic happens.
I should say that I am the biggest fan of both Trip Wamsley and Tom Hurst. They make me happy I chose to play guitar rather than drums or bass, because if had chosen either of those instruments, I'd probably have quit music after hearing these guys!
That I get to play with these guys is a dream. I've never trusted other players as much as I do both of them. E.S.P. is a proven fact every time we play together.

I've had mine for a couple of years now...I've actually known Roy Blankenship for close to 10 years. He's done work on my old Marshall and my old Deluxe Reverb.
The Variplex has kind of been pushed as getting the original Van Halen tone (which it does admittedly, very well), but to me, it's basically an ideal '67-'68 Marshall plexi, that's grounded better and has a Variac that you can use without killing the amp. Which means it's perfect for getting my sound, which for better or worse, isn't very Van Halen-y.
Between that and the Flexi 50, they're the only 'new' amps I really love.
I have to say, standing front of that THD 4x12 with the Blankenship cranked through it, is the sound of Manhood! :)

Mmmmmm....blackface with Jensens...throw in an Echoplex, and it's over: we can all go home!

I started the record with two Twins: a '65 and a '66. While recording, I realized that I really, really liked the '66, so I decided to sell the '65 (you know, to help pay bills while making a record!).
I am a stupid human being.

Yup, it is the VH thing that most have been speaking about in regards to the Blankenship but I agree it also sounds more rounded than say a vintage 68. That amp gunned must be an awesome thing to behold indeed!!!

I agree, your drummer is outstanding and thanks for taking the time to discuss your recording process! Being just a hobbiest I really enjoy listening to pros speak about music.

Check this Tom-clinic out (you might want to skip forward to about the 3 minute mark, where he plays around a little bit):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSJOCYy5bUo

He can read as well as any musician I've ever known, and has mad chops in practically any style....he's frakkin' sick.

And for those of you that aren't aware of Trip's solo-bass work, this is one of my favorite pieces by him:

This one is pretty hip as well:

Love these guys!
(watching these have reminded me that I must now go practice...a lot!)

Many thanks for taking the time to do this Chris!!

Sure, man!

I love this stuff! There is nothing like sitting in my little studio coming up with musical ideas and guitar sounds to go with them. Most fun ever...except for playing this stuff live...okay, they're both pretty bitchin'.

I remember watching Trip and Tom playing at the vigier gig and my Jaw just hit the freaking floor. I think that they were backing up the French guitar player . I already knew that I loved your guitar playing so seeing you 3 live at NAMM was great!!

Oh man hell yeah Trip is a monsta for sure, great freaking tone as well

Good times at TM!

For some guys that asked via PM:

I used API 512mic pres on both clean and dirty amps, except for JRB which was a Demeter VTMP.
The 512s were run into Urei LA4s. The dirty sound was mic'd with an old Shure Unidyne III 57, while the Twins were mic'd with Audio Technica 4033s.
