i'd like to try other powertubes in the herbert.
did s.o. ever try electro harmonix 6CA7 there?
in my engl savage i really liked them, but do they sound in the herbert?
other option is a mix EL34 with 6L6 - any experience? 2:4 ?

i really like the actual sound with =C=, but the sound could be a lil more singing.

thx
klaus

i had my amp for about an hour before i started going crazy switching tubes!

i've got a pair of Tung-sol EL-34B, a pair of =C= 34, and a pair of Gold Lion KT-77.

i can hear =C= sound with just a pair, so i'd think you should be able to mix and match and add to the sound to get what you want?

figure 6l6 with the 34's should be cool?

Does it make a big difference when you are putting in 3 different pairs as opposed to one set with the same type of tubes in it? One of the things I never tried when I had a Herbie.

i'm a total newb to the Herbie, so i'm just shooting from the hip, but yea i'd say it's a big deference.

but guessing, just one deferent pair of the right tubes would still be a big deference?

i went crazy swapping preamp and power all at once, but i'm way, way happier with the amp now!

I have 2 =C= 6L6s and 4 =C= EL34s in mine and love it. Has the midrange growl and warmth of the EL34s and a bit of the bigger low end of the 6L6s. I want to try other combinations of tubes, but I like this one so much, I'm always hesitant to switch.

you can mix and match, as long as the pairs are matched and biased, as the Herbie bias's in pairs (outer, mids, inners).

hi olaf,

dirk has only the jj kt77 - any experience in sound?
remember the "boogish" sound at your site?
i'd like to add a bit from that singing,
but i don't wanna loose the rough distortion completely.

Thats IMO a very good sonding "inbetween" tube. Use 6 of them.

Or 2 EL34s and 6 Svetlana 6L6GC

(until Peter chimes in and recommends 6550 :D )

thanks a lot - i got to ask peter for a new 8 tubes herbert
just a joke ;)

i thought of using the =C= 6L6 already, but don't you think the amp looses the character
by using 4 x 6L6, or doesn't it have any effect only using one pair?

I don't like 6L6s too much, thats why I prefer KT77 for some "bell" character.

Peter sagte neulich, dass sich im Vergleich zu 6550 (richtig gebiased) die 6L6GCs anhören wie "durchs" Telefon

I recently put some 6L6s to my Einstein and honestly couldn't be happier. The improvement on the clean channel is such that'd rather loose "a bit" on the gain channel. I haven't noticed that much change in the gain other than maybe the amp is a tiny bit looser now and less "saturated" but it's not something you really notice that much.

oha, das hört sich ja nicht so positiv an.
ich bin ja auch nicht unzufrieden mit meinen =C= EL34,
ich wollte einfach mal wieder was ausprobieren.
6550 kommen aber nicht in frage, da es sonst wohl das dach abhebt.
