I need to buy preamp tubes to keep as spares for my 101B.

If Steve K is reading this maybe he can tell me what preamp tubes he uses for the XTC so I can shop for those...

If the tubes are listed in Amazon.com the better since I am hoping I can buy them from there...

Thanks

Nico.

Ruby has the most reliable preamp tubes on the market right now. the HG+ and HG are tough to beat. Tung Sol's are tough to beat and a great as drivers for clean channels. Loop drivers just whatever is laying around. JJ Gold Pin balanced in the PI.

So, for the XTC, my shopping list for the XTC cocktail would be:

1-Sovtek LPS
1-JJ Gold Pin 12ax7 with balanced triodes
1-Tung Sol Reissue
1-Chinese 12ax7 B
1-Ruby HG+
1-Ruby HG

You won't need any new tubes for this amp. Its all good to go as it is. Just plug in and romp.

I'm friendly disagree with you Steve in this point.
In my experiences, ALWAYS NOS Tubes did difference for better.
I'm still doing some NOS Tube's test with my XTC 20th, but the NOS Mullard and NOS Mazda did a good improvement.
Does it worth the money? For me YES, but it's subjective. All depends of the ears and pockets of the players.
Cheers,

I'm am not sure about the Ecstacy, but in my Twin Jet a Sovtek LPS sounds great in V1. I rolled through French Mazda, Siemens E83cc triple Mica, Mullard, and Tesla Rosnov E83cc. The best combination to my ears was LPS, Ruby HG+, Rosnov Tesla, Tung Sol Reissue, Ruby HG+, and a balanced reissue Mullard. You have to remember allot of newer amps do not always sound better with NOS glass. They are voiced with newer tubes. Not to argue NOS are made much better and last longer nad in many applications sound better. I am not so sure with Bogner.

The beauty is in the eye of the beholder....
I have different experience. I tested NOS Mullard, NOS Mazda, NOS RCA, NOS Amperex Bugle Boy and they are far superior regarding the tone and noise from Sovtek, Tung-Sol and JJ Tesla. I also have the Tungsram and RFT. These sound better, but I found too much noise for my taste.
I'm really like to find current tubes with the same level of my NOS, but I can't. Maybe, bad luck.
Same happens with Power Tubes.
Keep rockin',

Well, NOS tubes opens up a whole new world. If I had a dozen or so to try, I am sure I would find something. But, I can't really be arsed with scouring ebay for NOS tubes I know nothing about. Its good you got them and you are probably right. Just goes to say that they don't make stuff like they used to. When you find the winning combination, pass it on.

Hell, the 20th sounds great with the generic China B's that Bogner shipped in it and playing at higher gain levels, I cannot tell much difference in any of them.

Steve

Can't tell that much of a difference at higher gain settings to warrant not selling them at big profits.. I had a huge NOS collection. Power and pre tubes . Best of the best.

I got tons of mullards and ei 12ax7 for sale,,all bought to manipulate a 101b

  And what was your outcome? I've had them all and sold them all at nice profits. In audiophile land they are worth it, but not so much in guitar land unless you are into vintage tone and amps. I prefer a modern tone so NOS tubes are not worth it to me. In a vintage amp there is nothing like a quad of Mullard EL34 brown base single getters. Everyone goes for the double getters which are too HiFi for guitar. Each his own  For my tastes, I'd rather use mostly new production.
