Hi,

I recently bought a white chassis 101b and although I really impressed with the amp I´m wondering if I could improve it by trying out some different preamp tubes (it came with a new quad of JJ power tubes, so I´d figure I start messing with pre tubes before replacing those).

the preamp tubes I got with the amp are JJ´s in V1 & V2, and 12ax7EH in V3-V6.

Do you have any suggestions for different preamp tubes? What I have lying around are some SovtekWXT, SovtekLPS, Svetlana, NOS JANPhillips amongst other...

Unfortunately I do not have the Chinese 12ax7 that Bogner recommends (unless the original Soldano labelled tubes that came with my X99 are Chinese, I don´t know if there´s any way to tell).

Get the Sovtek 12AX7LPS tubes. If you must use JJ's, try the gold-pin tubes. You should only need them in V1 and V2 - if I remember correctly? Also try a JAN-Phillips 5751 in the phase inverter position. Get rid of the EH tubes. There are a lot of bad ones out there.

Thanks,

I´m definitely swapping out the EH´s (don´t have good experience with them from the past).

I have some JAN-Phillips 12ax7WA which I´ll try in the PI (and maybe V1 & V6). Also gonna try the LPS´s

A 5751 really has a nice effect on the overall preamp character. We use to put these in the old Mesa/Boogie Mark IIC+ amps (V1 and PI) to smooth them out a bit. Never tried a WA in a PI.

I love the prewar Yugo EIs. The current Mullard reissues are way better than I expected, but you may find them dark.

Just v1 and 2 are where you want the jj's? What if you're looking for more gain?
