Finally coming to a head here I feel. Just noticing in my usual browsing, overpriced stuff is just sitting it seems like. People selling used gear for the same price or more as the product new aren’t getting that for it anymore.

All the stuff going on with inflation and the economy finally coming to a head.

Thoughts? Or is it just me?

On the high end of things...I feel like there are guys that overpaid for stuff for sure, but if they plan on keeping it and love it, it won't matter in the long run to them. I have for sure seen a lot of "flippers" who are starting to realize that their "investment flip" they bought isn't going to work out for them. Mid priced/low end gear is absolutely plummeting at a rapid pace. The days of the $600 used MIM standard strats and $400 used Squires are gone (lots of investment flippers got in that market). It seems like the pedal market is really starting to go downhill as well. The big box stores are starting to fill up again with used gear.

It was getting insane for a while. As someone who just likes trying different stuff “flippers” would get on my nerves. The guys trying to sell a block letter 5150 for over 2 grand. Gtfoh

You're right, overpriced gear is sitting, but the masses are still hell-bent on overpricing their gear. That hasn't changed much. In fact, certain things have only gotten worse.

Personally, I've had better deals buying new. There's always stores on Reverb blowing stuff out. I bought another PRS S2 594 Singlecut brand new, cheaper than used. I even upgraded the tuners and I'm still below used prices.

I found a reputable store on Reverb selling a new Friedman PT-20 V2 that has an excellent reputation, and website. I zipped over there and bought it, saving myself sales tax, and he avoided fees on Reverb. Win-win.

Yeah, people are gonna just keep overpricing it, especially if they paid too much. Most of those guys are still going by Reverb prices which to me, isn't real world. Out in the wild, even on craigslist/FB marketplace there are almost always better deals to be had (not to say there aren't dreamers there too). There is absolutely nothing wrong with someone asking what they want for their stuff, but when it's not selling at all and they just sit on it...I guess that's their choice but they can just sit on it.

I think the really great hard to find stuff will stay high...C+, early Rectos, 1990 and earlier Marshalls. But other more common items seem to be coming back down.
It's the stuff you don't see much of, that will stay up IMO. JCM 800s, they made 10s of thousands of them yet there aren't that many out there on GC.com for example; 5 yrs ago you could see 10-20 on their used site on any given day. Now, 1-3 tops. 08/09 USA Charvels? Nothing out there. When they do pop up, they are 1800 on up. And they sell. Crazy. I love the 2 I have, but they aren't as great as my 86 Jackson. Yet the Jackson was cheaper.

Exactly. Something is only worth what someone will pay for it. As of late the consumer is less willing.

Yeah, I hear you. I have an early recto rev e and it’s nuts what people are willing to spend. Don’t get me wrong it sounds good, but man I’d take some of the other boutique stuff out there any day over it.

I get stupid, lowball offers for things I'm trying to sell on Reverb, knowing full well that person is trying to get me to leave some money on the table so they can flip it for a few bucks.

I sold some transformers out of vintage Fender amps a while back for way more than I thought anyone would pay.. but they did. :p

ive found more "too good to be true" deals on both reverb and craigslist/marketplace since covid started that i cant even count them all, i dont even like going on craigslist anymore cause everyday theres something i dont need at a price i cant say no to. yeah, harder to find desirable items are up along with everything else in the world, on the whole though the used market isnt anywhere as bad as people here make it out to be in my experience

the tide HAS turned and the used prices are starting to decrease

though, the increase of NEW prices over the past 3 years will likely stop us from ever seeing the pre-covid used market, which was at least reasonable

If used rectos were still cheap AF I woulda bought one to send to Hermansson a while ago.
I'd love to have a trashy/beat up/knobs missing/torn tolex modded recto.
$800 $900 is lowest I been seeing if that . Sucks

Supply vs demand.

People with cash sitting on sidelines.

Most spending more money of energy and food. Less on wants.

Personally if you want something in short supply now and it’s made overseas grab it as supply lines may get weird in the next few years.

Starting to see more deals on vintage amps, but not on Reverb. Marketplace seems to be where I see them. For sure still a buyers market.

I scored a couple of good deals that I couldn't pass up, but stuff for 'normal' prices, I am bypassing.

Had my Marshall 8100 listed at the local shop for a few months, may just drag it home. Could sell another amp, but will wait till the spring. Local shop is flooded with pedals. They seem to moving mostly guitars as this point from what I have seen.

In general every year I notice stuff not moving much around this time and it picks up in March-April time frame when people get their tax returns and are planning for the summer gigging season.

I agree that the deals are to be had locally and no longer on line. Some good deals on this site time to time if you are an american buyer but less so for a lot of us dealing with exchange rates and weak ass dollar.

Also, right now is NOT the time to buy any JCM800's. They've become the new Plexi. The better deals are actually on the plexis themselves! I am seeing JCM800's get an ask price of 2000 CAD but a 71 plexi has a value of 3-4k. They sit though so if you have cash in hand you can probably get someone down to 3K.

Reverb is dying. They screwed themselves by giving in to the gov. I guess they had to, but they are absolutely going to be losing business now. Fook paying taxes on used shit. Someone already paid it. Get your dirty hands out of my pockets.

Prices always start declining this time of year due to the holidays as well then go up again in January. I hope they stay down but that's something else to consider.

I sold an 800 for 2800 a couple weeks ago. It lasted a couple days and I had a tonne of interest.
