Big Fuzz Tone

My beloved Renegade head has recently developed an issue. I was playing through channel 2 when suddenly I lost almost all volume. Channel 2 now is very quiet while channel 1 appears to be operating normally. I need some help diagnosing the problem.

Sounds like a tube issue. Start swapping them out one by one until you find the culprit.

DON'T PANIC, That's a bad power tube. Mess with the Tube Mix and you'll find the bad side, then swop them for new. If it was me I would buy a new set of both power tubes, Egnaters do work the power tubes hard and you can bet the other side will go bad soon enough. I like JJ tubes for the power tubes, they seem to last longer and are cheep, all the tone is in the pre amp tubes if you like messing with different tubes but power tubes just seem to be power tubes to me. The half power thing in Egnater's is kinda cool, most other amps would just stop working. I had one of my Marshall's go up in smoke at a gig once when a tube let go.

If it was a power tube then channel 1 wouldn't work perfectly no matter where the tube mix dial was at, right? And on channel 2 it doesn't matter where tube mix dial is, there is still very low volume.

Then that could only be tubes V3 or V4, by the sounds your power tubes are OK, CH1 only uses pre amp tubes V1 and V2 but CH2 uses all pre amp tubes so that just leaves a problem with V3 or V4. You can follow what your amp is doing in this chart.....again, don't panic it will be just a tube......

I tried replacing both v3 and v4 one at a time then both and still no change. If its not a tube problem what else could it be?

I'm having a similar problem, but intermittently. My problem is definitely not tube related. Also, my problem includes having the reverb go haywire. Next time I turn it on, everything is fine. Any suggestions would be helpful.

"this is why i should stop posting to this forum and just stay a lurker...lol"

have you unplugged the footswitch to check it's not that.
could it be a dirty gain pot on the channel.
long shot....could it be a battery in a pedal if your using any.
apart from that the only other thing I can think of is that there is internal switch for the FX loop you could try getting at and pushing in and out to see if its that but even I don't think it will be that.

but I'll keep thinking.....

I noticed today the effects loop doesn't work either. So it must be an tube issue, right? Before I go and replace every tube is there any thing else it coud be? I have swapped each tube out one at a time (I only have one spare) with no change. Could be more than one tube maybe?

Have you tried plugging your guitar straight into the FX Loop Return. This will show you which side your problem is, Pre Amp Tubes or Power Amp and Phase Inverter Tubes.

I plugged guitar straight into fx loop return and it worked. So what does that tell me?

If your amp works through the loop then your power tubes and PI tube's are OK, that just leaves your pre amp tubes. If Ch1 is working then it's V3 or V4. If Ch1 is also not working then it's V1 or V2. But first try the changing the Loop Tube V5 just in case it's that one.

My renegade head quit this weekend...second time in 6 months. I hope it is something simple. I just went to turn it on and nothing happened. The tubes light up but no lights and no fan. I am waiting to see what the shop diagnostic discovers.

Got my amp back. Sounds great. I love my Renegade and I've had it since 2009. It has quit on me twice in the last 6 months so I am a little worried that this amp may be unreliable. I thought about trading in for a new Renegade so I would have the warranty. These 2 repairs cost me $350 combined. Right now I can get a new head at GC for $700. I do love the features and the tone of this amp. Whether I keep this one or get a new one I still love the renegade.

Still no luck figuring out the problem. Hopefully I hear back from Egnater soon.

Your problem is that it's an Egnater! Very unreliable. Some people get them fixed. Usually break again in a few moons..
