I'm planing to buy another guitar and I was thinking of getting a Paul Reed Smith Custom 24, but I've been checking out the Shur guitars and the prices are comparable to the PRS. Has anyone experienced both guitars and can give me some feedback? I'm buying it for my 50th B day and since after you turn 50 you only have 20 more years or so to live, I figure why not! LOL. I'm used to very high frets(SS6100) and thinner necks. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

Whichever you get, can we get some clips posted?

I wouls suggest it depends what you need, the custom 24 I have is great but more limited than my Suhrs. Both are great but they excel at slightly different areas, if versatility is what you need (and I think you do judging from your excellent band clips) I would suggest the Suhr might be more useful to you. I have a couple with HSH pu config and they do it all pretty much. Check out the new pro series M's, they are just as nice as the customs and far more affordable.

I've always wanted a PRS, but I think if I was to choose today I would go with the Suhr.

I have no actually experience to share on the subject, though.

Thanks for the info, I guess I'll have to try them both. I aleardy use a custom Warmoth that I built and has a scalloped neck with stainless steel frets and a HSS pick up configuration with Joe Barden pick ups which is what I use live and plays really well plus a beat up 64 Fender Strat. I'm looking for a studio guitar which I'm not planning to use live because I'm so clumsy so my live guitars have a bunch of nicks all over the place! My main concern is the neck since I have a bad left hand which I had tons of cortisone injections and a operation on my thumb and a herniated disc. It's a miracle I can play at all. My wife has to sometimes button my shirt since I've lost some coordination and strenght. So all my guitars are set up with low action so I can get through a gig or a session.I love my Les Paul but the frets are to low for my wimpy wrist.LOL! Thanks for the compliment!

I picked a Modern over a PRS about 3 yrs ago. I just didn't gel with any PRS' I played. The Modern is also more versitilty in my book.

Suhrs are great. I prefer the Standard though over the Modern. Do you want a 24 fret. In my experiences the upper frets aren't as wide as they are on a 22 fret. Maybe they are but to me the Standard just feels better to me. I could defintely live with either though. The fretwork spoiled me to other builds so far.

I had both and preferred the Custom 24. Couldn't gel with the Suhr. It probably comes down to scale length!

Sure! I'm getting one of my amps modded by David Gray, a Metro Plexi 50 watt and I'm getting the Mod 1 plus. David is a very cool guy. Then I later found out about FJA mods from a member of this forum(Mailman123), so I'm sending my Splawn Nitro to Jerry to get it modded too! So I'll post some clips. I love Rig Talk because is full with great people that are very helpful and cool! There's a wealth of information in all the forums, I love it!

Thanks for all your suggestions, I guess I'll just have to try them both. I'm mainly a Strat guy and usually prefer single coil pick ups, but with my business I need to cover many guitar sounds. But I do enjoy playing diferent guitars cuz it inspires you to play in different ways.

yeh +1 on the clips, but each in a new thread of course

PRS Custom 24 is probably my favorite guitar Ive ever played, Shur included. You can generally find deals on used 24's.

No, tons of clips with a new thread for each.

Honestly, everyone bitches that the forum is slow so why not more clips.

Especially the pre factory guitars. The late 80's PRS are supposed to be great. I am told they have that handmade vibe to them. Another guitar that is supposed to be like that is Mcinturff.

Agreed on all counts. The Custom 24 is the perfect guitar for me. It feels like home.

OK, I have 2 PRS 24fret guitars. One is a custom 24 and one is an Artist. The custom 24 has a wide/thin neck, low action and is an excellent guitar. I use it mainly for drop D tuned tunes in our sets. The artist was my #1 guitar for many years during the early 90's. Chunkier neck, low action and sounds great. I have mostly retired that one from live and rehearsal...some fret wear and its overall value to me being the reasons.

I also have a few Suhr guitars. My current #1 is a modern (mahogany body, vulcanized maple neck, ebony fretboard with SS frets, Aldrich pickups). Simply love this guitar, can't say enough about it. Tone for days!! I also have a standard (mahogany body and neck, rosewood fingerboard with SS frets and HSH config with pull split on the tone control. Again, I can't say enough about how amazingly versatile and great sounding this guitar is. I have a couple other moderns, yet they are not currently in regular "live" use.

I use the modern for a hard rock/metal cover band and used the standard more when I was playing more "standard" rock and roll tunes. Both give me great tones with excellent options. Both have trem, the modern is double locking and the standard is not...both have NO tuning issues, they are dead on! Granted the PRS's don't have turnings issues even tho they are non-locking terms as well.

All I can say is the Suhr's and the PRS's are all great quality, great sounding guitars and to choose between them is no small feat. There are neck options for each. I have had my PRS guitars for a while and I keep them, they haven't been sold. That said, I do seem to keep buying Suhr guitars these days. I love the SS frets, the body style, feel of the necks, I could go on. The last few PRS guitars I played were at GC and they had worn strings and high action...didn't play well at all. I am sure a good set-up would have worked wonders, but I was disappointed nonetheless.

If you can play a Suhr, do it. If not, I bought my first one used, sight unseen from a RT brother and I have never looked back.

Sorry for the length, hope this helps...BTW, great playing on your vids.

I played 3 Suhrs today at Tone Merchants, and I think I might be a believer. He has one there thats an insane Tiger stripe but its amazing. one of the best feeling sounding guitars i have EVER played. Kinda blew me away. I cant let my mind go down this path because ANY guitar that starts with a 3K price tag is outta my range for sure.

Although the Used ones are in my range! (sort of)

Hey Reez. Hold out and look for a used one. If its nicked a little on the body send it to Suhr for a refinish. The price is cheap considering. They really take care of you and they will change the build sheet to match your new finish if you want since it is done in house. Its not just the guitars that are great. The service is just as good. An incredible company and the guitars are amazing once you find your specs.

Suhr - attention to details is impressive. Ordered a custom shop Suhr T style for approx $3200 (similar price for a nice PRS) and it's amazing. A Suhr Modern can cover a lot of ground. But obiously it's whatever one feels/sounds the best in your hands.

Get both?!

what you said about turning 50 and maaybe have 20 more years to live.

Oh my freegin gawd, that means I only have 16 more???

(just bustin yer balls man,,,,50 is GREAT. Buy the Suhr, dont look back)

I went for the PRS Custom 24, but later I'll get a Shur. The new PRS have new pick ups(59/09) and they sound really nice. Guitar Center had a deal, 15% off anything above $500, plus I get post production tax since I work for film/tv industry,so I couldn't pass it up. The guitar was $2,900 and after the discount and the post production tax the total was $2,566. Once I recover since I already bought 2 amps a bass guitar and now the guitar plus I'm having 2 amps modded, I'll look for a Shur guitar. I'm not to crazy about guitar Center's service because those dudes don't know anything about the gear, I tried 10 different PRS but I didn't like the necks and the frets, but this one was the closest and more confortable for my wimpy wrist. All the PRS guitars I tried were out of tune and not set up properly. The amp room had a nasty ground loop on all the amps! I just bought it at GC because of the deal. Thanks for all your help guys, I truly appreciate everyone's input and your willingness to take your time and help me out! Here's a photo of my new PRS
