Gassing a bit for a singlecut, the SE singlecut and tremonti are both in my budget. What is the consensus on the stock pickups for these? Youtube vids are indeterminate. Some are nice, others are hacks.

All the SE's I've tried out, the pickups seem usable but very flat, without much character. Haven't ever A/B'd them to anything else though.

They are ok, but they do lack a bit in character and output.. There is a youtube vid of the SE HFS and the American HFS.. The real one is hotter and stands out more.. I think if he had added a bit of gain and dialed in the amp different they would have sounded almost identical..

The PRS website store sells the PRS pickups if you want to go that route, but you could go with Seymour Duncan for cheaper as the PRS American PU's are about $130.00 a piece....

Changing a pickup is a fairly quick and simple matter :) Once I got an Ibanez RG, and I didn`t even plug it in before I opened it up and got to work with the soldering iron :D You should be able to score a Duncan pretty cheap if you don`t like the sound of the original PUs.

The Tremonti that comes in the US Tremonti models is a killer pup. Its pretty hot, but not too much so, it stays tight under heavy gain. Pretty even across the spectrum, but dosent have the detail up top of say an Aldrich, its a tad darker
Have not compared to the Tremonti in the SE's, but I understand they are different from what I have heard
The US one is sweet though

Yeah, I'm not worried about the prospect of changing pickups, I seem to do it every other week.  I was just curious about the stock ones because I am trying to be a bit more cost conscious, and spending another $150 on a $300 guitar puts me on the fence.

my experience with my old Tremonti SE were that the pickups were ok until you got into high volume/gain applications...then the microphonic squealies came out.
replace them asap...and while youre at it...change the pots and toggle.

nice guitars otherwise.

the ones I had in a SE Custom 22 were very hot
they push the amp a lot, but they lack detail
not good pickups, but not awful either
better than stock Epiphones, Jacksons...

but what really pissed me off about that guitar was the fake photoflame top
there's no maple at all (not even a thin veneer)
just a printed picture glued over the body wood
real Reed Smiths have very thick tops
