No comments from me on Suhr, never played one. Owned 5 Andersons, still have four, and Owned 7 PRS, still have two. If someone would trade me Andersons for my PRS guitars I'd probably do it but not the other way around.
I like them in this order but, 3rd place is still REALLY high up there in the grand scheme of things:
TAG
PRS
Suhr
Keep in mind I own at least one of each that I would NEVER sell because they are THE best of their kind (in other words, we're talking 9.8, 9.7, 9.6 type ratings for each brand).
I love both TAG and Suhr guitars but I'm basically a Strat player for the most part so that tips the scales in favor of those two builders. PRS makes a nice guitar with a near perfect fit-and-finish but I've found far too many of them to be a bit dead sounding and lifeless in my hands. That said, I've played a few that were awesome as well...they just don't seem to consistently have "it" for my personal preferences like those other two do.
I love the PRS and TAG guitars I've owned. But I never could click with Suhr guitars. I love his amps and pedals, but never could bond with his guitars.
Have sold all but one of my PRS's went back
To a supa strat and a tele, I hate it when works of art
get dings from drunk idiots (my self included)
The moderns I've played were all top shelf, as well
as the Anderson's . There are several other builders
Out there that have really upped the game so for me
it comes down to what floats my boat.
Hey Jim, you probably know how I feel. I love my TAGs. My favorite guitars I have ever owned. I have been lucky enough to custom spec all of them so I have received exactly what I wanted each time. All of them were met/exceeded my expectations. To be very honest, it isn't just the guitars that sold me. It is his company methodology that hooked me. I have had the opportunity to chat and work with Tom over the past couple of years and contribute at a very small level. He is one of the most genuine individuals I have ever spoken with in the gear industry. He does what he says and puts his heart into the business. I like the smallish feel and the company's service had been fantastic. I have owned a lot of guitars in my life and these are some of the very best I have ever played. I feel lucky to own them.
I think Suhr guitars are great too. I have played a handful of them and the craftsmanship was awesome (even on the used ones at GC). John offers more options and features than just about any custom builder which allows the buyer to build anything they can think of.
PRS makes some good ones as well. His style of guitar just isn't my thing but that doesn't mean that they aren't top notch. I owned a McCarty for a litle while and it was cool but couldn't get along with the knob placements. His custom guitars are on par with your smaller boutique shops IMO.
You just need to measure what is important for you in a builder. For me, it came down to Tom and his small company. He only builds about 700 a year and the hallmark of his work is consistency (his words). That resonates with me in addition to the fact that he and Roy make me feel like I am as important as any national act/musician.
