Hi all, returning to Suhr land after some time away. About a year ago I had an Od-100SE+ and although it was built like a tank, I just did not care for the voicing. Seemed to have to much lower mids and never got into the "rippin" mids as I like to call it, or the typical modded Marshall vibe. I have seen/heard alot about the PT-100 and it sounds like I should have got one of those instead, much more to my liking. Am I correct in that it is voiced more in the upper mids/ more Marshall like in its voicing and attack??? I very much like the brand and the customer support is top notch, but before I jump back in, I need to do a lil research first. Thanks for the help.
I had the SE+ and now have the PT100, latest version with all the bells and whistles (that is probably obsolete as I type this
).
The SE+was a cool amp, but I really like the PT100 quite a bit more for my particular tastes. I do, however, love the super grind and, to a certain degree compressed, tones of my XTC 101A and Herbert, the PT100 fills the gap with a more open, punchy type tone. For me, the XTC and Herbert fit better than the SE+, which seemed like sort of in the middle of the two, but didn't make me want to keep it. The PT100 is a different story.
"Marshall-like" has become a bit meaningless for me to describe tones, but the PT100 is crunchy, open and doesn't sound its best when then midrange is dialed way back. Its not necessarily an "all on 10" type of amp because its got PLENTY of low end even when the WHOMP is ignored completely.
The feedback control is really cool, and is very much exactly as Pete Thorn describes it, where as you increase it, the tone becomes less spongy and more "hard" and modern sounding. Keeping that knob right in the middle makes me perfectly happy.
I can see this amp not being for everyone, however. It doesn't have the mond-o distortion thing going like an Engl, a newer Rivera or the Diezels, but yet gets plenty of sustain and punch that isn't typical of your more vintage "rock" amps. Truly a vintage/modern type amp! I think its suitable for anything but the heaviest of the heavy metal.
