Question about changing speakers in a 412 cab

I have an older model Diezel 412 that was loaded with the custom eminence speakers which I believe are 8 omn speakers. I had a buddy of mine who is knowledgable about equipment to put 2 V30 in an X config. with 2 custom eminence. I have read on here some people getting a good result with this speaker combination but mine sounds aweful. I normally have liked V30s in the past. The V30s are 16 omn speakers could is this part of the problem having 2 speakers rated 16 omn mixed with 2 rated 8 omn in the same cab?

ABSOLUTELY! Besides the odd impedance you're amp is running at now, two of the speakers will see more of the signal then the others creating a very unbalanced sound.

Yikes. Stop now and take those out! You definitely have a mis-match that will affect the sound (negatively) and could potentially do harm to the amp.

BAD BAD BAD :gethim: ;)

Just my opinion on the speakers but I am not a fan of the X pattern nor am I a fan of V-30's. I very much dislike the emi speakers mentioned. I fully understand the idea of blending speakers in a cab but the reality is the reason you are blending is due to you wanting more of one dynamic and or less of a different dynamic right? If so, those dynamics are still there but simply masked a bit. Why not get the dynamics you really want and need for your playing style and keep things simple? The simpler the better from a foundational perspective, IMO. Then when you add effects, color, etc. you have a more neutral base to adapt those additions to and in the end it is my belief that you have a better overall dynamic.

The cab you own is very different then the new cabs but still a very good cabinet in comparison to what is available. I would invite you to try the hemp cones and see you like them. They should be 8 ohms ceramic.

Im also kind of in the same boat. Really considering selling the cabinet. The weber beam blockers helped a bit, but not enough. After hearing the cl-80s in my 1X12 im really wondering if i can put them in the 4X12.
Can i put them in a 4X12?

2nd

Im also considering using 2 2X12 cabinets live instead of a 4X12. Do you think that will be just as powerful soundwise..?

A lot will depend on the cab and its size along with its build quality. Some 2X12 cabs are about the same size as a 4X12. A 2X12 will sound different then a 4X12 because of the reality of more speakers, more internal space, etc. It is not necessarily good vs bad but rather a thing of difference. I myself prefer a 4X12 cabinet but that is not to say that a 2X12 or a pair of them doesn't sound good or that it will not provide you the results you desire. It really comes down to preference.

I have an x cab & it us the best sound I have ever had. It is custom made however.
I used to run 2 Texas Heats & 2 gk12 75's. Swapped the 75's out for Cannibas Rex's WHOA. Best cab EVER.
Mind you my cab is Aluminium & ported to reject unwanted low flap. It also has an acoustic treatment on the back board to reduce treble reflections. It is always being r&d'd & is constantly getting better.
The idea is to eliminate the wood in the cab colouring the sound & finding the best raw speaker tone to match the best airspace.
With a normal cab a lot of what you hear is generated from the wood. The problem however is the sound of the close mike doesn't get much of the wood interaction so it sounds totally different. With the ALI cab the tone is nuetral so what you hear is what you get. If it sounds good in the room it will sound good close up.

Also a trick to make cabs sound bigger is to only run 2 of the speakers. Increases the airpace interaction.

I have wired my x cab with 16ohm speakers to run 3 ways. All 4 as an X @ 16ohm. Top & bottom split blended one of ea speaker type @ 8ohms per half. Diagonal split unblended same speakers together @ 8 ohms per split.

Running 2 of the speakers blended sounds best, then all 4.

Very handy for the studio. Works with Herbert, Pittbull, 5150 & every other amp I have tried. Bands beg me to let them borrow my cab @ gigs & recording.

MAKE SURE ALL 4 ARE THE SAME IMPEDENCE.

I'd love to see how you have it wired. Got any pictures?

Next time I open it up I will take some pics of the wiring. I use seperate jacks on the back more like a mesa cab instead of a switch. Less chance of tone sucking that way.
