Question about Herbert tone

Hi Everyone. I wanted to know your opinion about a certain thing between the VH4 & Herbert.
Last year I was deciding between buying the VH4 or Herbert and I went to the store to try them both out. I also brought my Mesa 4x12 Standard Straight Cab loaded with Celestion V30s to try it out with both heads. I don’t know if its just me, but I thought the Herbert sounded rumbly when palm muting through the Mesa Cab, especially with low notes since I play my guitars with low tunings. It felt as if everytime I palm muted the low notes using the Herbert that the sound broke apart very quickly and didn't stay punchy at all, but when I plugged in the VH4 it was super tight when I was doing the palm muting. Just wondering if anyone else noticed this too. I ended up buying the VH4 because of this. I did however notice that the Clean channel on the Herbert was much better than on the VH4, too bad I couldn't have the Herbert’s clean channel as my clean channel on the VH4 lol. I did sit down with Herbert for a while and played around with the settings, but maybe it was because of the pickups on my guitar? I use PRS Custom 24 & PRS CE24, both guitars have stock HFS & Bass Vintage pickups. I don't think it would be the cab since Mesa cabs are pretty good with palm muting and big bottom end.
Hope you guys can share your thoughts.
Thanks

IMO it was probably the cab. I played my Herbie thru a mesa when I first Got it and thought the same thing. A better cab makes a world of difference

Another vote for the cab. Herberts bass is MASSIVE and you need a really tight cab to project this.
The Mesa cabs seem to add bass which is contra-productive with the herberts voicing

Yeah the Lowend on the Herbert is EXTREME! I had the VH4 as well before the Herbert.
I just turn the Bass back a little on the Herbert's channels and add some more DEEP on the power section. Sounds RIDICULOUS KILLER!!!!

I swore by my Mesa cabs until I got my first Herbert... trust me it was the cab, I experienced the same exact thing, I currently have a Mills, which is phenomenal, our 3 best choices are the matching Diezel Cabs, a Mills cab, and from what I've heard the Bogner cab, that's not to say there aren't other cabs that would sound great as well.... but the Mesa cab isn't one of them, trust me.

Hey guys, thanks for the info, good to know. In your opinion, do you think I should trade the VH4 for a Herbert?
My playing is very modern hard rock and some nu-metal, for example Chevelle, Staind, Shinedown, Breaking Benjamin etc.
And if you guys think I should trade it for the Herbie, is there any way I can program my pedals to work only on channel 1, so for the Clean channel? I do this on my VH4, but each channel has the insert, and I know the Herbert doesnt have that.
Thanks again

I sold my VH4 once I plugged into the Herbert and saw how kick ass it was.
I havent looked back once. :D

Hey Mailman1971, thanks :)
But would I be able to have my pedals in the Herbert loop and only working for channel 1?
Thanks again

That I am not sure about.
I dont run anything but a Clean boost in front of the amp.

Anyone running their herbert through an orange cab? Ive never heard a bad thing about the orange cabs.

My buddy has an orange cab...are ok but no diezel or mills. More classic voicing. And@ Mark Anthonhy..check out my group. All Diezels on the guitar tracks.

Hey Paul, sounding good man. Really like the tunes. This is pretty much my style too :)
Are the tracks recorded with the Herbert and VH4? Or just one of them?
Do you know if I can have my pedals running only on channel 1 of the Herbert if I ever pick that one up?
Have a good one

Nope.
Herbert has no channel insert like VH4, the Herbert 3 loops involve all 3 channels but you have switchable loop to bypass your fx.

never tried MIlls but with my 2009 Diezel FL v30 PM are tight and brutal..the amp seems to explode! :D

thats both amps...a few tracks of VH4 & a few of the Herbert. = ) Glad you enjoyed the tunes...and no you can use the effect in just channel one...unless u do like bronzie said   if you need anything else hit me up.

it does??? no shit....didnt even mean it to be like that! Kudos to me!!!

Hey Pauly and Bronzie, thanks for the info again. I guess the only way I could keep my pedals working only on Channel 1 of the Herbert is to buy the GCX Audio switcher with my Ground Control Pro midi footswitch pedal. I guess you cant win 'em all lol
