Are they absolutely necessary? Cause they piss me off big time. either I'm very unlucky or this is a general BAD DESIGN! cause in any amp i've owned, without exception, I push the covers in and try to turn so they lock in place but they won't turn all the way. They just hold on barely and at some point in time they just pop off their place making a big sound and scare the shit out of me cause I always think a tube or some other component just blew up.

Can I just take them off and live happily ever after?

Thanks

I've wondered that myself. I don't own a tube amp but I've changed tubes on friends' amps who were too scared to do so. They irritate me but by the looks of it, they're meant to hold the tube in and down. They seem like something worthwhile if your amp is constantly being moved around.

I always keep them on my preamp tubes, because i seem to get lower noise when theyre kept on. If your's aren't fitting correctly, order some new ones. They shouldnt just fly off when you're playing, mine dont move unless i move them.

I just tried without and I don't notice any difference in noise level. Guess I'll just order some if nouse starts.
Thanks fellas.

Cool!

On almost all of my marshalls they have been off for awhile and ive never had any problems even on my gigging amp. Never really seen a point in them. Some say they reduce noise others say they add it and some even say they affect the tone.

I think they're more important on amps with a lot of gain stages. Each additional gain stage will amplify any noise that the gain stage before has picked up. So removing it from a Marshall wouldn't make as much difference as say a Diezel or Elmwood.
