Alright, several issues here....so I bought this new m4 off of another forumite a few months back after selling my 101b. Had a power amp laying around ROcktron Velocity Valve designed by Egnater. Got that thing all fixed up and running again and plan on using it with this new m4. SO I got it all hooked up this is my first rack sys so forgive the stupid questions but what is the best type of cable to run from the pre to the power amp??????

Ive got audio connect which appears to be stereo or should I use regular instrument cables....thanks.....Heres the problem and Im going to call Egnater for this but im getting big time buzz/hum and I read on here somewhere Bruce described as you are switching channels going into the higher gain modules and it gets worse then it is the 12at7 preamp tube in the m4??? I pulled that one out and it says its a 12ax7 tube written on the tube. So to clarify I am getting increased hum as I go into higher gain modules.

The other issue is kinda funny but Im getting no chugga chugga just chink chink... when doing a standard palm mute power cords. Its very high gain squishy/noisy but no mid or bass, even when I am trying to add it...ive got the t/d, 3/4 , Erect, eg5 installed now and they do sound good but something is wrong here...like I said I just had this power amp completely gone through by a very well respected gear tech here in ATL and he fixed a few things etc. So I dont know what could be causing this other than the preamp tubes in the m4???

I cant really advise on the setup stuff (I use a head), but to get more chunk with the EG5, make sure you have bass boost on 2. Makes a huge difference. What kind of guitar and pickups are you using? How old are the power tubes?

have you tried the lift on the back of the pre amp? Could be a ground loop. Next up just use an instrument cable from the pre to the power. Let's start with this.

THanks Jeff. OK I tried those things got the instrument cable and tried using the lift switch. Same result.

Also I am reading some of the setting as far as power am p and pre master gain etc. I have no idea how ppl are going past 9 oclock on the power amp volume knob. I broke a string on my acoustic and it wasnt even at that point and I had the master at 12 and gain/module master @12 as well on the preamp. I was told this power amp is loud as hell but this is ridiculous.

So what can we try next??

Do you have another amp to run it into? Keep it simple. GTR > Cable > Preamp > Cable > Amp > Speaker. Make sure all components aside for the M4 are working properly by verifying functionality independantly.

^You should probably add another cable between amp and speaker so as not to fry the amp. :D

DOnt have another amp here at the house but the power amp was tested last week using different stuff somewhere else and worked fine. I just sold a bogner a few months back that worked with the cab, and I have tried sev cables. So far it seems to be the m4 ....still humming loudly as I switch through to high gain channels and not getting any chug w/lack of bass/mids.

Yea yea yea. whatever. go ahead if you feel it's necesary.

UPDDATE : .... OK so I took the rig down to a friends practice space where he uses a vht 2/50/2 and a jmp 1. marshall pre. (Its got 30 presets and only maybe 3 or 4 were standout to me, but those that did were really nice) anyway. So we tried abunch of shit. I hooked my rack up to his cab.... same result.... I hooked the m4 up to his power amp VHT and same result... In fact it seemed to be a little worse, it really would scream when I would go through the channels I have loaded in the m4 right now, td, eg34, Erect, eg5. So when I get past the td which is the first module. It hums to the point of where the feedback is just screaming/skreeching, even when I have the strings muted with my hand, this is on the bridge or the neck pickup. I can get it to stop when I turn the volume all the way down on one pickup....etc. u know how a LP works, so, His preamp didnt do that even when I cranked it It, it would not feedback like that. This rig sounds good and there is so many tones in here its really great. But I am getting this uncontrollable hum/feedback. So Im still were I was at before.

Try to isolate if possible. Take out the T/D cause that seems to be fine correct? Then install only one of high gain modules. Try slot 4, bottom right. See if the first one hums. then pull that one out and try the next one etc, trying to see if it is just one pre amp and then trouble shoot the hum. If it is only one module then its that one and could be just a bad tube. Understand?

yeah , I gotcha Jeff. Thanks for the reply, I will try this tonight and probably give you shout tomorrow. I meant to today but got caught up.

Not yet Jeff, I tried to call you last week but had to leave a message, I have been busy on the job hunt pretty much since then.........when u mean tubes could that be the tubes in the M4 or just in the modules, because I think we pretty much got that covered I have tried them all, this happens on all modules higher gain than my t/d. once i get to channel one on the eg.34 the hum/feedback starts. I cant really turn up the volume on anything really compared to what I hear guys doing here.....like power amp vol maxed or at 12 and preamp vol at 12, if I put my module master vols on 12 my preamp master and power amp master have to be at 9, or Im getting insane feedback craziness, I dont know if that is just because this egnater velocity valve is causing this because of it being much louder than other power amps, I dont know but I had the same problem with vht 2.50.2 as well. I have tried guitars with lower pickups as well. I will call you this week and see if maybe there is something I can try here to test tubes etc.

If the M4 is sitting on top of the velocity value it may be proximity hum. Does it still hum/feedback with out the guitar plugged in? Is it the volume insanely loud?
