Question on noise with Herbert

My amp makes quite a bit of noise on channels 2 & 3. I can unplug the loop and take the guitar cord out of the front of the amp with it still on and its dead quiet. When I plug the cord back into the front I get the sh sound back with nothing in the loop, I realize its a high gain amp and it might make a little noise. I bought the ISP Pro Rack G and it doesn't help. Any ideas?

With no guitar plugged in, a relay shorts the input. It's the same relay for the mute function so it's dead quiet.
Call me a whack job but I have had better results keeping Herb quiet with a Boss NS2 through the switchable loop than
with the ISP. Ch. 2 and 3 are a bit noisy to begin with though.

I had the same problem, but I run gain on the 2nd channel realy high (around 2:30).
I bought the ISP Decimator Pro Rack G and it works perfect for me =)
I have it in the switchable loop.

I dont get any noise from my herbert, even at band levels. Maybe cleaning inserts, somethinig with the cable or guitar or could be a preamp tube.

I used to have a problem because there was a faulty preamp tube. It would sound like air was moving through the speakers.

Thats a good way to describe it! Thank you!! I'll check that out. Is there one that it should be or just start with the 1st and work my way?

I have to 2nd this, never even though about a gate with the Herbert.

O.K. Just spent an hour with the Beast. Effects in the serial loop gave me an audible hiss. The Parallel loop is dead quiet with the master at 2:00.
IIRC from memory, the older Herbert's did not have as much hiss from the Mid Cut either. Anything around 11:00 or higher on the new ones and there is a bit of hiss.
You have to ask yourself active mid cut or passive? Passive is quieter so it may depend on the age of your amp.

Its a newer amp 2008. I have my mid cut both at 10:00

i never had any noise issues...and i play it LOUD!! maybe a bad preamp tube or cable or something in the line.

It was difficult to find the tube, so at one point i changed all the preamp tubes. There is a store that checks tubes here in holland, they take about €2.50 per tube, soon ill send them all my spares, this takes away alot of work.

I replaced all my preamp-tubes with the ones Peter recommended.
But there is still some noise from the preamp tubes, because I can cut all the input signal away and still have it.
I dont get how people can crank the shit out of this amp and dont have ANY noise
Maybe it is because I run Channel Vol at 01:00 and Gain near to 03:00 at channel 2.

But the Decimator Pro Rack G can be set very sensitive - no tone cut at all and dead quiet when I stop playing

did you try to turn the guitar volume down?
if you don't hear the noise anymore it is not
the amp, it is your guitar!
maybe a ground problem?

this. i can play with a band without a noise gate and wail on ch2 gain set at 3 without any problems. of course it'll have some noise but it's all from the guitar because turning the volume to 0, it's really quiet. try changing V1 also.

I don't know dude, it sounds broke to me, you should sell it to me, cheap. ;)

Volume on the guitar down to zero -> noise is still there. Thats the reason why I think it must be noise from the preamp tubes.
But the preamp tubes were all changed to peters recommend and are brand new. But I can life with the decimator for now, although I am confused that some people dont have this problem...
And it is no ground problem for shure. There is only the Herbert and my Box and (now) the decimator. Also it doesnt sound like a ground problem, I had those some time ago with other stuff in the signal chain. Just this typical high-gain-hiss from preamp tubes.

@ Jimmie: I will never sell this amp :gethim:

I just want you to be happy, and be happy also.

my RM100 is quiet with my Rob Modded 1086, but hisses like hell with my Pete Modded Ultra XL - but I find myself going to the Pete module because its just so fucking hard core. Am running it w/d/w with an Art Sla2...its going to take some time learning how to tame 300 watts of hiss pouring out of 3-4x12 cabs.
