Questions about Vox-type tone and Class A

So, like many people, I was under the impression for a long time that power tubes defined the sound of an amp. 6L6 automatically yeilded bouncy fendery tones, and EL34 automatically gave you british hazy midrangy tone.

Then, I learned from Bruce and Jeff and everyone on this forum that it's the preamp design and tone stack that have much more to do with tone shaping, than the actual type of power amp tube does. Especially at lower volumes.

Still, I wondered how they could get "Class A" tones from an amp that was class AB. I assumed that the ONLY way to get class A tones was to have those tubes cooking away in a class A circuit.

But after trying out an Egnater VX module, and hearing some clips of the Randall Top Boost Module, modded or unmodded, they sound pretty authentically Vox-y to me. My question is: how do they do it?!?!?! Is it all about the midrange EQ-ing with the vox? I'm guessing that, similarly to the way dropping EL34's into a Blackface Fender won't turn it into a marshall, that the preamp has more to do with the vox sound, than the fact that it's running on class A tubes?

Likewise, what would happen if you had a vox preamp running into a class AB power amp. Would it still sound like a vox?

Bruce is a Genius!

Bruce just knows how to design good sounding circuits. He will be the first to tell you there is no secret magic or "special voodoo" that makes the amp sound good. It's old technology that he knows how to tweak. He understands what makes them work and sound the way they do.

What I can't figure out is where they hide the secret mojo sauce in there... :D

It's in the Egnater stamp on the board and logo on the front !

If you like a Vx / Top Boost / Super V then you owe it to yourself to run a pair of YellowJackets in Triode mode...holy crap!

I always assumed 1/2 power on the MOD50 was triode mode..could be a bad assumption....

The YJs I have are triode mode converters anyway apparently....there's no difference in tone between 1/2 and full power. Standard YJs are pentode I believe and in theory should work with half/full power making a difference.

I plugged them in last night with a new set of TADS and it just sounds killer man!!!!!What can I say buy these amps ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THD Electronics sells two different flavors of Yellow Jackets: YJ Pentode and YJ Triode.

Yellow Jacket Pentodes = EL84s running at full power (about 10w each). They have a rather "sharp" Class A EL84 tone. If you put the MOD50 in half-power mode, you'll knock the power down to about 2w each, and the tone will be the same.

Yellow Jacket Triodes = EL84s running at half power (about 5w each). They have a smoother grid and sound "sweeter" while still maintaining the traditional Class A tone. If you put the MOD50 in half-power mode, you will not the power down to about 1w each, and the tone will be the same.

Personally, I think that YJ Triodes in my MOD50 are probably the ultimate recording amp! :) I can't recommend them highly enough. And even in half-power mode, 2w is loud enough to shake walls and get you evicted from an apartment, way louder than conversation! (by comparison, the Zvex Nano micro-amp is 0.1w, so a half-power MOD50 with two YJ Triodes can be significantly louder!)

That's one combo I haven't had a chance to try yet! The JJ's sounded killer though. Can't wait to get a minute to slap the TADS in!

Okay, sorry for the "cheeky" thread derailment. Sometimes it's hard to resist a joke.

Other than TAD, who else is making a good EL84 these days?
