Ok,so Tim comes over last night to turn loose his Hagen
on my Herbert.

Cabs used;
Scumback slant 4x12 w/M75 65 watters
Marshall Handwired straight 4x12 w/H75 65 watters
Diezel straight 4x12rear loaded w/stock Eminence speakers.

Hagen has been talked about in here being "looser" "greesy".
I thought the amp sounded real tight and the low end was punchy.
Everyone has there own perception of what things sound like
so this isn't an argument against whats been said before,just my humble opinion
to what we were hearing

Channel #1;
Very chimey,nice top end,gain pot on this is a real nice feature

Channel #2;
This is my idea of straight big ass rock & roll. I was constantly
praising this channel. LOUD bottom end. EQ'd perfectly (well done Mr. Diezel)

Channel #3;
Now the fun starts with higher gain. Can start to hear a little Herbert here
but not as compressed. Everything gels nice together wherever the EQ is set.
Just a ton of sustain....WOW. Seen Tims eyes roll back in his head as he's holding a note.
Only thing that stopped him was me screaming, "READY FOR ANOTHER BEER" ?

Channel #4;
More open sounding to #3. Low end seemed louder,but by this time @ 6 beers apiece,
my ears might have had enough.

Gain on #2,3 & 4 were all set around 3 to 4 oclock.
Channel volumes at 12:00
Master volume at 9:00/10:00 , stuff started
falling off shelves and breaking. Turned it to 11:00 but that didnt last long :lol: :LOL:

Slant Scumback cab was pretty top end'y sounding
Had to dial back the treble & presence.
Hagen absolutely loved pounding the Diezel cab.
Tight ,loud .Just seemed to really gel with this cab over the others.

Both heads are winners as we all know. Just the Herbert has more gain on tap
and with the mid cut,different tones can be achieved.

By no means do I think the Hagen would benefit
with a mid cut. The EQ ranges are just perfect .
Diezels got this dialed in right :thumbsup:

Two great,but different amps. Need both in my stable.

A few things did actually fall off shelves and break. The volume was quite shocking, I had to step out of the room a couple of times. :lol: :LOL:

I agree with John, Hagen is a different beast than Herbert, and while you need to goose the gain on channels 3 & 4 pretty high to get into Herbert land, that's just it, no more is needed. Lose a little of the midrange and the amp gets EVIL sounding. I would say it sits in between the Herbert in terms of the mid cut on and off.

Channel 2 is REALLY cool. I could see guys overlooking this a bit, but when you get the amp opened up it does in fact have this (I hate to say this, but its most accurate) "kerrang" type tone that others have mentioned.

Hagen didn't get along at all, IMO, with the Marshall cabs last night, though I really like it through my 1960 with 2 75s and 2 v30s. I don't really like it through my little Mesa 2x12 recto cab which has been my favorite 2x12 for some time. It seems that the Hagen is more finicky with cabs than the Herbert.

After hearing and playing the Diezels side by side, they are really two very different amps. I can hear and feel the "Diezelness" in the Hagen that I also hear and feel in the Herbert so you can tell they are from the same family, but that's about where the comparison ends. Any thought that the Hagen isn't a super-duper gain monster should be dispelled. It does it in a more open manner than Herbert. It has less palpable compression, which to me is precisely what I wanted, but for others I can easily see Herbert being the choice.

I am thoroughly stoked with the Hagen but I wish I had a Herbert as well...I want them all. :rock:

,,,,,is that why you were leaving the room?
I thought you had to fart... :lol: :LOL:

This is the only downside/drawback to Diezel amps is ... they are ALL f@@king killers that you MUST have!
:D

Cool!! Had the Herbert and VH4.....
heard this was a nice mix between both amps....still wanna check one out someday. :thumbsup:

Awesome review.

The term greasiness may be my doing. I use it to describe the fact it's a bit less compressed and feels more open than, say, the VH4 or Herbert. The decay on the higher gain stuff really gnaws out and sounds like a chainsaw, it's not all thick and hi-fi. I like the term greasiness, but I hope it hasn't clouded anyone's thoughts on the amp. The Hagen is a beautiful amp for sure.

And yes, ONLY problem with the Diezels? Gotta have 'em all.

Thanks so much the killer play-by-play. Awesome review and a lot of fun to read :thumbsup:

I did pen the term "Greasy"from Unkle Mo.
Someone had said "looser in feel" and Mo chimed in with greasy.

I did like that term but misunderstood what your meaning was,,,gottcha now :thumbsup:

You own them both if I'm not mistaken?

Well well boys love that Hagen has a home where he is loved lol. Today I cranked the shit out of Herbert n let my guitarist use it. O did he smile. Quote" this just crushed the Hagen"
And he brought up a triple rec I used. Diezel n Mesa together are just punishing !

No beer coffee only. Studio tomorrow fine tuning details !

Now now, Gentlemen... Let's all try and get along. Scotch, bourbon or whiskey - to each their own :D

Yep. All 3 main amps actually. The Herbert was the least longest kept, and I've had various iterations of the VH4 and VH4S - and the Hagen is in the arsenal. Ya, it's greasy. I coined that term in the sense that - well - say you get this thing up to noon on the master and 3 o'clock on the channel volume, Ch.2 or Ch.3 or Ch.4 (mind the feedback on 4 at these levels tho); I love using a touch of delay to 'fatten' things up, allow for some slapback or spill; but it's not necessary. It's TIGHT when palmed effectively - no doubt about it. But you can let any of these channels ring out a power chord or a drop tuning barre chord and shake the axe and it'll just keep chewing along forever. Then reposition into another chord/barre and it "slips" into it while still chewing along. It's open... Very open when the volume opens up. Percussive when muted effectively. Tight when played right. Greasy?? Compared to the V, I didn't know how else to describe it :lol: :LOL:

Peace,
Mojo

I'm not bashing any Diezel they all rule. They all have there place. It would be stupid if they all sounded the same. But to me at last I'm back w Herbert cuz that is the best amp ever made on this planet. For me at least. !!!
