Re-amping a cranked Marshall

I know this was/is often done by session musicians & guitarists with Wet/Dry/Wet setups, such as Michael Landau running his cranked Plexi into a line mixer, then rack of effects then H|H stereo poweramps. He gets a killer tone, I reckon the best out of the LA studio muso mob.

But do any of you guys here do this with your Marshall amps? I often just see modded Marshalls or re-badged modded Marshalls/replicas into 4x12 cabs. I want to get a big cranked sound out of my JCM 800, but the attenuator just ain't cutting it. I don't like boosting it with a pedal, although have kept trying using an EQ pedal as a level boost/attenuator. I can't bear keeping the Master volume at a mouse whisker above 0, and I don't want it modded.

I have tested this already by slaving the amp via my Hotplate's Line Out, into the effects return of my Roland Jazz Chorus 120. I think I've posted the photo somehere here on RT. I couldn't believe how good it sounded! It was more "Marshally" than using the amp into a 4x12 cab! I thought the Jazz Chorus might stuff the sound up, but it was completely transparent. I set all the controls to 11 o'clock and the sound was glorious. Nicely crunchy with plenty of bark, rawness, and guts, and cleaned up beautifully when rolling back on the guitar's volume control. When I turned the in-built Chorus on, it was instant spacey swoosh. For heavier sounds the sound was wide but some of the low-end girth was lost, but I guess that's the nature of chorused distortion.

I'm going to test this instead with a Mesa/Boogie 50/50 stereo poweramp, into a 4x12 cab. Would the poweramp affect the tone too much, or lose some of the bottom end? I don't mind some extra warmth but I want to preserve the punch & bottom end.

I still gotta re-built the cab and install new speakers though!..

You're going to want a non tube, super clean poweramp, otherwise you'll color the sound a lot.

Bugga  .

I guess that's why the Jazz Chorus worked so well with it then.

my 2 cents is that you'll be just fine with the 50/50, and most likely dig the shit out of it.

Thanks mate.

I reamp my stock '79 2204 JMP through a EHX 44 Magnum and it kicks ass. Line out of the hot plate into MXR EQ then Carbon Copy delay into 44 Mag into 4x12. I don't do the whole W/D/W thing just create an FX loop for the amp and essentially a second volume control via the 44 Mag. I was using an ART SLA-2 before but I actually like the tone of the little 44 Mag better. It will still get stupidly loud but I can also play at mouse fart volume and have cranked tone which is a plus. I never play that quiet but it's nice to know I can.

I've become a big fan of reamping after trying it since it sure beats hacking up my mint stock JMP for an FX loop to use delay with it.

You will be fine with the 50/50.

One thing to mention is that what you are talking about is Slaving an amp and Not re-amping. I'm only mentioning this because Re-amping these days is a term used for recording and it can be confusing.

I have tried slaving amps with clean ss power and Tube Power amps and Ive always returned to using tube but either way will work fine.
The premise behind using SS power was to not add color to your tone and that was highly touted by EVH and many others, but what I found funny about that is that the guys who were raving about SS power, were using mosfet SS amps that were designed to mimic what TUBES do LMFAO!

The real savior of using a SS amp is that you can now get powerfull Poweramps that are really light, and trust me, when you run a slave rig, carrying an extra tube poweramp can be a Royal PITA!!

Cool, thanks for the clarification.

And yeah it's funny about the MOSFET!
