I know this was/is often done by session musicians & guitarists with Wet/Dry/Wet setups, such as Michael Landau running his cranked Plexi into a line mixer, then rack of effects then H|H stereo poweramps. He gets a killer tone, I reckon the best out of the LA studio muso mob.
But do any of you guys here do this with your Marshall amps? I often just see modded Marshalls or re-badged modded Marshalls/replicas into 4x12 cabs. I want to get a big cranked sound out of my JCM 800, but the attenuator just ain't cutting it. I don't like boosting it with a pedal, although have kept trying using an EQ pedal as a level boost/attenuator. I can't bear keeping the Master volume at a mouse whisker above 0, and I don't want it modded.
I have tested this already by slaving the amp via my Hotplate's Line Out, into the effects return of my Roland Jazz Chorus 120. I think I've posted the photo somehere here on RT. I couldn't believe how good it sounded! It was more "Marshally" than using the amp into a 4x12 cab! I thought the Jazz Chorus might stuff the sound up, but it was completely transparent. I set all the controls to 11 o'clock and the sound was glorious. Nicely crunchy with plenty of bark, rawness, and guts, and cleaned up beautifully when rolling back on the guitar's volume control. When I turned the in-built Chorus on, it was instant spacey swoosh. For heavier sounds the sound was wide but some of the low-end girth was lost, but I guess that's the nature of chorused distortion.
I'm going to test this instead with a Mesa/Boogie 50/50 stereo poweramp, into a 4x12 cab. Would the poweramp affect the tone too much, or lose some of the bottom end? I don't mind some extra warmth but I want to preserve the punch & bottom end.
I still gotta re-built the cab and install new speakers though!..
