alright, I'll re-tube the Einstein.....

- What type of music I play: pop/rock/blues mostly............ Hardrock/Metal for fun.

- What do I want tone wise:

Cleans: I want the clean ch. to sound warm and Mid-scooped, I don't like bright/thin cleans.. for example: I don't like Stevie Ray V. cleans, I prefer John Mayer warm/fat/mid-scooped cleans.

Overdrive Channel: I like DRY/fast attack, TIGHT ods..... think VH4....... (I KNOW I KNOW, if I want a VH4 OD then I should get a VH4, but it's not that easy since I'm tight on cash, and honestly I've grown to like the Einstein) So I'd like a set of tubes that would make my OD channel as tight as possible without loosing clarity and definition.

What should I get??

Do I need to change both preamp and poweramp tubes to get the maximum tone improvement or will the poweramp tubes do it?

thanks guys.

Why retube it? Its how old? Do you play loud gigs?

well olaf, like I said in the other thread I opened my einstein is 7 months old, got it new from musicstore dot de and the amp sounds very very good, BUT two things are making me think about this a little:

a) sometimes when you buy an amp (specially if it's used, but sometimes even new amps) is a good idea to re-tube it, just to get a fresh start. I'm not so sure of this, hence the other thread purpose.

b) again as explained in the other thread, everyone always say how much gain this amp has and how you can't even use all of the gain because of how much gain it packs, and honestly I find my amp doesn't have THAT much gain. When I play Metal and use my high output pickup loaded guitars I have to set the gain to 3:30 - 4:00 in ch.1 mode 3 or set the gain in ch.2 to 2:00 - 3:00 (this channel has more gain than ch.1 mode 3) and all of this if to get a "metallica type of tone...I'm not talking Pantera/Lamb of god super saturated guitar tone.

is this normal? or maybe I need new tubes?

Swap (preamptubes) V5 with V1 (and V2 later).
See if it gets better.
Then check bias. Set a pair to 65mA.

Olaf, what would you recommend the bias rating be if I am using a Weber Bias Rite? is it half of 65 ? -c- el34
Thanks

33mA per tube.

Joey,

I'd say check the biasing first.
Second....get rid of that cabinet you have. You've complained about it before.....

Are you hearing any weird noises with the amp itself? Could something be wrong with it?

Sounds like you may be starting to want something differernt.......and if that's the case then perhaps that is what you may want to do.

thanks guys..... well the cab, I must say it's been sounding better and better (I believe those V30s needed some breaking in time......

Now, the tone in my Einstein is incredibly good....I'm happy as a puppy with it......I got a bit confused with the "gain". Everyone always say how much gain the Einstein has (enough gain to even play death metal) and I find that the amp has planty of gain but not THAAAAAAAAT much as people say it has. So that got me thinking that maybe my Einstein needs new tubes or maybe it' the Bias.

For example, if I set the gain knob to 1:00 (channel 2) it's pretty gainy (think Metallica's Load) but if I wanna get some "Lamb of God" gain for example I need to set the knob to 4:00...... is this normal? Most people say they don't have the need to pass the gain knob from the 1:00 position.

At 1:00 PM on my Einstein, that is a whole lotta hellacious tone, especially when playing live as I do regularly. At 4:00 PM....it's almost too much. The other thing that may make a difference is which guitars you are using with the amp? Either way, I will never need a boost pedal in from of this amp, that is for sure. I compare this to my JVM Marshall combo which also has a boatload of gain as well and I have that one dialed back as well.

I don't think my Einnie needs a boost either... it has a lot of gain for sure, but maybe I got confused and though it should have more.

By the way, I never set the gain tone pass the 2:00 pos. when I'm using my EMG loaded guitar. I might set the gain knob to 3:00 - 4:00 if I'm using my single coil - P90 loaded guitars.

start by rolling back your gain to 12:00 (or below) and crank your channel and master volumes. that's where the real tone lies. the channel volume will add gain from the preamp. then adjust your gain knobs accordingly... this is especially effective for high output pickups/guitars. its stated in the diezel manuals.

I'm sure this is were it's at. Since I bought my Einstein I haven't been able to crank it.
