Anyone know anything about them. Probably looking in $800-900 range. Ive never been an acoustic player, so im well out of my depth. What should I be looking for? Id be nervous about getting something on the used market, unless you can reassure me...

Ideally, a cutaway would be nice, and something with a nice action. Steel string.

Any advice?

Steve

Look at some used Taylors....812ce is a great place to start. Not up on current prices, sorry.

What style? What sound are you looking for?

Urm. I dont know, haha. Like I say, I dont know anything about acoustics. I guess a good all rounder is in order? Whats the Les Paul of the acoustic world?

I am first an acoustic player and second an electric. If I was going to buy an acoustic I would buy a Martin D-15. I have one of the newer D-15s as well as an older D-18. The D-15 is well made and has great sound. Its a solid wood guitar with no frills but rings like a bell. No electronics in it but I have a soundhole LR Baggs that I put in when needed. Don't buy anything thats plywood, hold out for solid wood everywhere, its worth it. I think the D-15 is the best buy in acoustics at the moment.

About a year ago, I bought a Takamine (similar to https://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... sku=516310) but for about $700.

Mine may have laminate sides, but full wood front and back (relative to the link). The cedar top sounded REALLY nice. In the $500-$800 price range, this guitar beat the Breedlove, Talyor, and Martin's that I tried. To me, the ability for it to function as an acoustic guitar was the top priority (so nix the ovations), and then the onboard electronics. Realistically, I have only plugged it in a couple times - generally, if I want to plug in, I grab an electric.

Peavey Ecoustic. Dang good playing guitar, steel string, made in the US, reasonably priced used. I have one and it's a great guitar.

Depends on how nitpicky you are about tone. The woods make a big difference in the guitar, I say go and try out a bunch at Guitar center and see which one you prefer. The Takamines are real nice for the price, I ended up buying a Taylor 414-CE LTD last year when I was looking for an acoustic. Settled on Sikta Spruce top/Indian Rosewood, Taylor's are very easy playing acoustic guitars

If you don't know what you are looking for you should probably start with used Taylor or Larrivee. If you want new in that price range Larrivee is the place to look IMO. However these 2 are more like strats of acoustic, more brightish tone.

Used Guild's are excellent quality acoustics and can be had for very reasonable prices.

The new GAD series Guilds are very good mid-priced acoustics as well.

2 good brands to checkout are Seagull and Tacoma. I have a Tacoma JK 50ce, and it blows away any Taylor I've heard. After working for a major retailer for years, and trying virtually everything available, I went with the Tacoma. They tend to have a feel similar to a Taylor, due to both having a bolt on neck. Some Martins sound wonderful, but have a more traditional feel. Takamines are VERY over rated, IMHO.

As I said in an earlier post, Martin is the way to go. Martin guitars set the standard and benchmark for the world when they built the first D series guitar. I'm on my sixth Martin since I started playing. Go Martin and never look back.

Actually, mine is that same model... damn that's a MAJOR price increase in 12 months...

This thread actually mirrors what I saw trying to research when I was planning to buy - everyone had a different opinion. Go out and try the guitars. Then you'll know what floats YOUR boat.

D15s are good, the only reason I don't like them is because they are unfinished & made of very thin wood. These guitars need special care, especially with temperature & humidity.

Thanks for the tips guys! The Taylors is over my limit, but I will check it out for sure. One thing that worrys me, is that I live right by the sea, and the salty, damp air plays havoc with my strat neck. I guess I forgot to mention that earlier.

Im not going to have a chance to check out anything til next week, but it seems guilds, takamines and Taylors have the biggest distribution in my area, so ill be checking them out first....
