Hello,
I was referred to this site by the good people of https://www.thegearpage.net.

I just picked up a used Rebel 20 head in a trade at GC. When I power it up everything seems fine but it puts out nothing as I turn the Tube Mix knob to the EL-84 side. Its like a volume knob, lowering volume until its barely audible. I checked the tubes right away and they look perfect. I can't see any burn or cloudiness or anything. But, with power, they are not getting warm, there is no glow... nothing. The 6V6s light up and get fairly hot and when I have the Tube Mix to them completely the thing sounds great!
I have called GC but stupid me, I did not test the dang thing at the store so I am not sure if they are going to work with me. They said that everything they take in they test, well of course, and I know I screwed up by not plugging this thing in... I can't believe I did that...

Anyway, does this sound familiar at all? Is there something I can do? Will it hurt the amp if I pull the EL-84s and I just play the 6V6 side until I can figure how to get this fixed?

I am going to put in some new-ish EL-84s that I know work in a 5:25, and see if they work for this amp, man I hope so!
Thanks in advance!
Pat

Thanks for responding so quickly!

How many fuses are there? Just the one in the back right? If that is the only one, then yes, and it looks clear as day... If they blow don't they get fairly dark and cloudy?

Okay, so I read the manual. Saw that there is a fuse on the power jack. Checked that, it looks great. The inside metal piece is a lot thicker than the FastBLO fuse on the amp. Should the 500 Ma fuse have a metal piece on the inside that looks as thick as the one on the power socket?

Changed the tubes and changed the fast blo fuse. Still nothing from the el84 side.

Hmmmm, hopefully Jeff or Bruce will chime in. Also I think you can contact Nate or John at egnateramps.com.

Of course being New Year's, you may have to wait a day or two.

Thanks for responding again buckeye! I appreciate the effort. I took it back and paid the extra money for a new one in box. I am really impressed by the 6v6 sound so I'm trying with a new one.

Cool, let us know!!! From a total non biased poster (  ) I think you'll love it............

Just got the new one out of the box. I am not going to go on and on like I want to but... daggone... Get this, I started with the Strat. I was playing it and I was just floored by the tone. I reach down and turn the volume up... geez I had it only half way up. The one I had before must have been really messed up cause this is so much more! These are incredible. Can't wait until the wife is at work tomorrow so I can put this through the paces a bit more.

:D

 Its not just me going on and on and on about how great the R20 is then !!!  :D

The tone is sweet, I have had many complements from people at gigs saying they were "blown away" with "the sound" of my rig (not braggin, just trying to make my point) I have heard this from musicians and non-musicians alike. I believe it rings tones that are just familiar sounding to folks. When you go into a solo and you see people air-guitaring along with you, I feel something just sounds right to them. I play all decades of rock and the little monster has it all covered. Oh my god! I think I'm in love!

Congrats! I've had my Rebel 20 for about 4 months now and I'm still blown away by it and I'm constantly finding new tones with it. Now I can't decide what my "signature tone" will be because I like them all

Agreed - all round !!
My 14 yo daughter thought it sounded great when I first showed it to her, as did my 45 yo girlfriend. It must be the 'sound of rock' thing that instantly comes from it without having to muck about. I've never had usually disinterested 3rd party womenfolk say anything unprompted about my sound before.....

......if only it didn't look like an old radio

having said that - it does lower expectations before kicking off !!!

I have settled for the tube knob at 12 o'clock, and I even switched out the 'bright' switch for the first time at a rehearsal last night without any loss of clarity. I especially enjoy just turning up and plugging in and producing a killer roar while the other guitarist fiddles with his fx unit and fights feedback for 10 minutes to end up with a 2nd rate approximation of what a guitar should sound like.

Thanks Mr Egnater - you've made a lot of people very happy !!
Long live R'n'R
