I've been the happy owner of a Rebel 20 for 4 years. Two days ago, the output fizzled to nothing. All fuses are good, all lights are lit, all tubes glow. I do hear a hum when I switch from standby to play.

Any ideas?

A short of some kind? Speaker disconnected maybe? You might want to open it up and look around and see if something has come loose. If you do that, turn it off, unplug it, and let it sit for half an hour before you go sticking your hands in there. Seriously!

Thanks, Len...I disconnected it, let it sit, removed the four bottom screws and slip the chassis out. Everything looks good. Nothing burnt, no smell. I have a Renegade as well, but I love the Rebel. The closest service dealer is never open, so I'll have to find somebody else, if I can't figure this out.

The way it fizzled to nothing leads me to believe something failed. Thanks again.

Another good general rule: Check the obvious- the things it can't be. Guitar cable good? Plugged in all the way? It's happened to me- Freak out over no sound, and then discover I didn't turn the amp on!

Try changing the power tubes and see what happens- you never know.

The first thing I did was pull a fresh Mogami cord out of my box...still no sound. I also pulled the speaker cord off of the Renegade and tried that.

I have a fresh set of powertubes. I'll give that a shot. I'll also test whatever diodes I can access, with a DVM (good point about leaving it unplugged for 30 min :D )

I'll let you know what happens...THANKS Len!

Dead power transformer maybe- not sure how you check that. Search the forum. This sort of thing has come up before.

Looking at the schematic, I'm pretty sure I would have no front panel lights if the primary transformer blew (and a blown main fuse) and the powertubes wouldn't glow if the secondary transformer was shot.

Both of these are good news

Your powertube idea is fantastic! Easy enough to try. When we figure this out, we can open Len and Tommy's Rebel Repair Shoppe

Not diode, would create a dead short in power supply & blow fuses.
Jump the effects loop with patch cable. See if you get sound through guitar input. If not check send & return ( turn guitar down) plug in, you'll be able to rule out pre or power amp section. My GUESS is pre amp.
Signal trace from input through each gain stage. Laborious but effective. Don't do hot voltage testing unless you are experienced. SHAKE down the amp tech.
Be safe...

Thanks so much! This is my mission for tomorrow!

Plug you guitar into the effects loop return. See if you get sound. Report back please.

Bruce, I tried that, thinking it would bypass the preamp. Still no output.

As stated, I definitely hear the normal amp hum. when I switch from standby to play.

I swapped out the two preamp tubes and invertor (electro-harmonix tube). No change.

If you changed the tubes, and it still doesn't work, something is broken. It will need to be repaired. If it is not convenient to take it to a service place, contact josh@egnateramps.com for other options. You can certainly send it to us for repair.
Please let me know the outcome. FYI, the factory is closed this coming Mon/Tues. Not sure how quick a response you will get from Josh, though he does work 24 hours a day. Please be patient.
Thanks
