rebel 20 versus 30

Hi,

I've had a Rebel 20 for the last year or so, and really love it. I'm thinking about switching to a rebel 30 for the greater versatility, onboard reverb, and the great fenderish cleans on the 30 (according to what I've read). Are there are downsides to the Rebel 30 versus the 20? Part of my thinking is that I want to get an E2 and with only two modules available, I could skip the T/D and instead get a V/X and maybe a COD, with the cleans on the Rebel 30.

I play alot of clean, and milder overdriven or classic rock tones. No real high gain stuff, and prefer classic amp sounds to modern stuff.

I like the Renegade too but that amp seems like to much power to me, I'd never get to drive the power section without blowing my hearing. thanks for any advice

Same questions here.

Is the voicing for the Rebel 30 clean channel really different from the Rebel 20 run clean? Actually my biggest concern on the Rebel 30 is the lack of the mid control on the clean channel, since I run a pretty big scoop on my Rebel 20.

+1 on jones-ing for the M2.

+1 on the Renegade, can anyone compare contrast the Rebel 20/30 to the Renegade run with the 15W switch on?

Your style of playing is well suited for the Rebel 30. Granted, I have never heard the 20, as there are no dealers for Egnater where I live. I ordered a Rebel 30 based solely on Youtube and reviews.

The Egnater 30 is a special beast. At bedroom level through an Orange 1 x12 cabinet it is a great amp. But at gigging volumes is when this amp comes to life. Although it can't reach metal type gains the overdrive packs a punch like no other. I rehearsed with it today for the 3rd time and I am still in love with this amp! I can dial any type of sound I want with ease! And the cleans - don't get me started on the cleans! Bright and sparkling with lots of clean punch.

I have a Tiny Terror as well, my brother seems to think its better than my Rebel 30. He is crazy - the tiny Terror is a fun litttle gain amp but it's nowhere the character and versatility of my Egnater.

Bottom line is I love this amp - check out the Rebel 30 you may too!

I have the 20. From what I read in the Rebel 30 online manual, you only get the 30 watts when the tube mix knob is at 12:00. Is that really the way it works? My Rebel 20 gets a volume bump around the same setting. I wondering if the bump is near 30 watts on the Rebel 20. Not complaining, just curious.

This is probably right. 6V6 and EL84 tubes put out around 10-12W each, so a pair of them would put out anywhere from 20-24W or so - so yes, 30W probably occurs when both sets of tubes are working. This is the same with the Renegade. It is rated as a 65W amp, but that is only if both sets of tubes are working. If you are on either 100% EL34 or 100% 6L6, you will probably get around 45-50W.

I feel like I need to give a shout out for the VX and COD modules. Easily my two favs.

Definitely skip the T/D. For me, no matter what you do about the rebel, the VX cleans beat the T/D all day long. The VX just requires little more finesse.

The VX is a killer setup....COD is also. I'd also look at the SL as a potential alternative to the COD...or the BMAN. But...Rebel 30...w/ a VX and COD is a great setup for sure!!! :)

Rebel 30 is better IMO. I had the 20 briefly, but I did not find I could hang with one channel. No downsides to the 30. It is serious enough of an amp to make me put my MOD 50 off to the side for quite some time now. Planning on gigging with the 30. I am also thinking of going with an E2 the same way. I think your idea is a very good one.

Yes it is different. The clean channel on the 30 is excellent. Don't worry about the mid control, not a concern at all I assure you.

The 30 and the 20 are the same amp (power section). There is no difference. So yes the Rebel twenty in the center with all four tubes running is a "30 watt" amp.

And I agree, the Rebel 30 - E2 with a Vox module and a Bassman would be pretty dang cool.

Tried the R30 last night  Loved the clean channel, I have to say I like the R20 better for the gain stuff. I think I just prefer the brighter tones from the R20. To my ears, the R30 did'nt have the "snap"(think Def Leppard's Let It Go opening riff tone) I hear from my R20 and that tonal quality is what drew me to the R20 in the 1st place (I play heavy humbucker guitars and getting that "snap" quality without loading up on the highs is hard to acheive, just sort of thins out) IMO both amps sound great but the R20 get's my vote because of that particular tone. Have I finally found my Grailtone? :D

Well that's it there you go - decision made!

That is....until the new Egnater products are unveiled at NAMM 2010!!!

Was in Las Vegas this week and headed down to Guitar Center and played the Rebel 20 finally. I must say the 20 is certainly different from the Rebel 30 on the gain channel! I almost bought one! I was blown away by the sound, real nice. I would expect anyone with a Rebel 20 would hestitate selling for a 30, given the 20 sounds so good.

I also played a Blackstar, and that was pretty good as well and easily enters metal territory gains. However, dialing back the gain can produce some pretty nice tones as well. This is not the one trick pony I expected it to be. Very pleasantly surprised by this one.

Next stop was Sam Ash in search of a Jet City. They had a combo there but no head-cabinet configuration so I tried that. Not bad but it just didn't stand out for me. Was it the combo I didn't like? Not sure, but it wasn't what I expected and I left dissapointed. Had I liked the combo I would have ordered the head.

Still awaiting my Marshall Class 5, no sign of it and even the "big boys" don't have any yet. I expect I won't see this thing until March, but with my GAS I may get my money back and buy something else before then! :D
