I have decided to get the renegade. But a lil voice in my head says just get the rebel. I gig and practice. I was thinking of getting the renegade. Get the 2 12 cab for live shows and gigs. Get the 1 12 cab for practice. Then all i gotta carry is the head and my guitar to each practice or gig. How much better does 65 watts sound to 30?

Renegade! I had the Rebel 30 for about a week. It just wasn't enough amp for me. I don't know that one sounds better then the other- different. I have the Renegade 2 X 12 and it is a fabulous amp! Lots of power and tonal flexibility. You have much more headroom with 65 watts. 30 just wasn't enough power for some gigs. The Renegade has more tonal control over both channels and not just one. I had a Tourmaster for a long time. Great amp, too heavy. The Rebel 30 just wasn't enough after that. The Renegade is a nice in between. Got a lot of compliments on the Renegade's tone last night.

:D

ya thing for me is weight. I hate carrying stuff. I had a combo but just to heavy. The renegade really looks nice and 15% off at gc sounds even better :). What music do you play?

Both sound good, renegade is more refined sounding, rebel a little more raw-raunchy. I like the rebel better.

Get the 1 X 12 if weight is an issue. It also has front mounted controls which I wish the 2 X 12 had. I play rock, blues, country, some jazz, stuff like that. Very happy with the Renegade. The Rebel was great, but I think you have to be more of "minimalist" then I am. I would say the Rebel is more vintage sounding whereas the Renegade is a little more modern to my ears. If you need loud sparkling cleans the 65 watts will have more headroom for that.

I'd say that's about right, I flavor more the vintage, both great amps

I wish the Renegade had the Rebel 30's silent record out. That is a great feature.

I'm with Len for the most part. I have a Rebel20 and sometimes it doesn't have the balls that I want but it sounds so good like 95% of the time that I'd rather play it with the band than my Renegade. It's like the Renegade is too clean at club volume. I play blues and usually with some serious grit to it, so I like my amp to sound stressed out.

Another thing about the Rebel is that you can make it very loud by adding more speakers. When I run mine with two 1x12's it can be really loud. When I ran it thru my 4x12 it was absolutely unbearably - window shattering - outdoor only -monster loud with the master on maybe 10:00.

So adding speakers can help bridge the volume gap between these amps. You probably don't get the "punch" or "overhead" that you get with the Renegade. It depends on what you like.

So why do you need 65 watts ??
It's too much for small to medium sized venue's these days imo.
Noise restrictions in clubs & pubs are fast making >50w amps of limited usefulness.
My 50w Mesa has plenty enuf headroom for any situation - wouldn't want more.
And my R30 has been just fine too - it's a very loud amp.
There's a big difference in headroom between the R20 and R30 too - I've owned both
Mic'ing solves any issues in bigger venues for 30w amps

There just isn't that much difference in volume between 30 watts and 65 watts. I do agree with comments about the lack of need for more powerful amps in most small club settings. But over all, the volume just isn't going to be that much different between those two outputs. And for those who like headroom, it's nice to set the clean side at 65 watts and the dirty side at 18. You get closer to the best of both worlds that way.

As far as the Renegade being too clean at club volume... I don't get this at all. I can turn up the gain on my clean channel and get a very dirty tone at all volumes. In fact, I can make it sound dirty enough that it could pass for my lead channel.

The only exception to this I suppose would be if you're using exceptionally low output pickups = My Tele doesn't drive the clean channel as hard as my humbucker guitars.

FWIW

I have both!

I have to say that there isn't much the Rebel 30 can't do, and in some cases, I like it more than the renegade.
But the renegade has the main2 (solo boost) which is required in my cover band (with 2 guitars and keys).

In my original band, where I'm the only guitarist, solo level isn't an issue, so I like to use the Rebel 30.
Volume wise, at least in the range that I play, I don't see a big difference.

Fair enuf - I hear ya.
For me I use both a volume pedal and an MXR EQ pedal on my board so that covers solo boosting needs.
The other advantage of the R30 is weight - my head weighs only 12 pounds.
I add a closed 2x12 cab with easy carry handles.
Two trips and I'm done :D
