Hello

I just picked up a Rebel 30 head and cab.

I am having a hard time finding my tone in the gain channel.

I play mostly classic type rock, and my favorite tones are in the AC/DC to AIC range.
Also, I do gig so I want enough power to cut through in band situations.

Do you think a Renegade would serve me better?

Hmmmm.... Hard to account for your personal tastes. But the Renegade will do everything you need. Although I must say I don't know what AlC is.

As for power, 65 watts won't be much louder than 30. So I wouldn't give that a second thought. After that, "cutting through" is left up to how you eq your sound. Mids are what cut through the mix.

I love the gain control on the clean channel of the Renegade (I have a 212 combo) With humbuckers and the clean gain pegged, it gets a really good AC/DC tone.

As for the lead channel, just the other night I was playing Country and Van Halen w/in the same set and only needed to make a couple of amp adjustments to do it.

While I know there are tonal differences between these amps and I have no desire to give up my Renegade for a Rebel, I'm not hopeful that the Renegade would change your life much. But if it changes it in a few key areas that are important to you, that's all that matters.

Good luck.

AIC = Alice in Chains

Thanks for the input.
I'm really having a tough time. I love the looks and portability of the Rebel.
But I really need a gain channel that make me happy.

What if I were to throw some new tubes in there?

Think this would gve me a different feel/sound to the gain channel?

Can anyone suggest what tubes to replace?

Thanks!

Definitely dump the stock power tubes. They have a problem with failing very quickly anyway from previous observations here and elsewhere.

I like JJs; they seem to be reliable. Mine are two years old and still kicking.

You want to replace some of the pre amp tubes. I believe V1 and the Phase Inverter. I went with some high gain Chinese preamp tubes (bought from The Tube Depot online) thanks to a forumite's suggestion, and they seemed to give me a little more gain. That might be worth a try before you take a loss on the 30 and spend $300 more for a renegade. Good luck mate!

I consider my Renegade tone to be significantly warmer than any Alice in Chains/Jerry Cantrell tone that I've heard. It'll easily get the gain level. But not necessarily the harsh tone. I like Cantrell's tone, for the most part, and think it works well with their music. But I wouldn't say the Renegade mimics that sound without a pedal, and you can do that with the Rebel.

the renegade is more polite sounding-if you don't dig the rebel-check out the tweaker 40. The rebel 30 should get those tones for you though.

Thanks for the input and advice guys.

I re-set up my rig last night and it is sounding sweet now. Not sure if I had something connected wrong, some bad settings on my wireless or it just neeeded some extra warm up/ break in time.

I now have the warm sounding distortion that I wanted.

I would say the Renegade is more modern sounding whereas the Rebel is more vintage. Having said that, the Renegade will get some great slightly overdriven tones out of the clean channel when cranked and rolled to the EL side on the power tubes.

it's not spam, I had a clip-wrong link

I realize this is an older thread. However, I thought I would share my experiment with the preamp tubes on my Rebel 30 head. I'm a AIC fan as well. I play a pretty broad range of music from SRV/Albert Colins to Opeth and Dream Theater. I'm always testing new tubes and i run the bias on the power tubes pretty hot (50mVDC on both sides). This is want is working for me right now...

V1 - Tung Sol Reissue (selected for high gain) this will warm up ch 1 and help overdrive ch 2.
V2 - NOS RCA 12AX7 Black Plate
V3 - NOS RCA 12AX7 Black Plate
V4 - Tung Sol Reissue
V5 - NOS Ei ECC83 Yugoslavia

I run Tung Sol 6V6GTs and JJ EL844s in the power section.

Don't underestimate V5 (phase inverter). This position plays a huge role in the overall feel of the amp. I've found that the NOS Ei (built on the old Telefunkin machinery) really opens up the amp and adds layers of harmonics.

Just my opinion so far. Im getting some NOS Mullards in the mail tomorrow. Not sure where I'll play with those. :) I'll eventually find my perfect tone on this amp. I'm getting VERY close. :)

I found the Sovtek 12ax7Lps balanced phase inverter V5 to be a great sounding PI tube.
I dought a NOS balanced triode Ei 12ax7 is available now days. ?
