Getting ready to order the Renegade soon, but I thought for those who have played both why not get some input! :D

Any AB comparisons out there?

Thanks

They are two different beasts- But if I was choosing again it might be the Rebel 30 for the silent record out (can that function as a headphone out also?) and for the snappier Rebel overdrive...

I had both and decided on the Rebel 30 head and 1x12 cab. The Renegade has a lot of features but it was way heavy, the gain channel while having a tad more gain was on the fizzy side for my taste and being that it was 65 watts it was just way too loud. The watt switch did not do too much to make any difference like on the Rebel and the worst thing about the amp was the fan, it is always on and you can most definitely hear it. The reason for the fan is that unlike the Rebel the tubes are mounted upside down and there is no vent on the top of the amp so the fan helps with the heat. Overall, I just thought the Rebel was small but plenty loud for 30 watts, the gain channel had enough gain for my taste and took pedals for more gain very well and the clean channel was fantastic.

Thanks Len and lefttygtr for your replies! Appreciate your inputs.

Something to think about for sure. :)

I just picked up a TM 2X12 cab. If I were to go with the Renegade at 65 watts, I'd get a pair of the Scumback 8 ohms 65 watts, but if I go with the Rebel 30 then would going with a pair of 8 ohms at 25 watts be a better choice or just stick with the 65 watt speakers?

Can't say for sure, but one of the best sounding things I ever heard was the Renegade head and TM 212 cabinet!

Does the Rebel 30 silent record out function as a headphone out also? I bet it can.

You know, I bet you could connect headphones to the record out with an adapter of some sort.

I've got a renegade 212 combo. the gain is super smooth. (the stock preamp tubes most definitely do no do the amp justice)

Replacing the fan is an easy fix too. There are countless silent fans made for computers (noctua fans are EXCELLENT) that are near silent and push just as much cfm.

Here's a quick recording or 2 I did this afternoon. just the leads are renegade.

Listening now. SOUNDS GREAT!

Silent fan could do the trick. Too bad not silent recording (thus the need for a Hot Plate).

So let me ask... is the Rebel 30 and the Renegade THAT much difference tone wise?

Jamie

The TM212 is amazing so I can see any Egnater killing through it.

With my back and shoulder issues I am planning on downsizing to a smaller rig. I am thinking of the Rebel 30 and a good 112. I want something bigger than the Rebel 30 cab so I might find a used Mesa wide Body 3/4 back 112.

I'd probably replace the tranny and Choke in the R30 with Mercury Magnetics.

you'll save a lot of money going heyboer. and no need to swap the choke.

chances are though, if you're wanting to improve the tone, there are much cheaper ways to get it. (speaker swap, better tubes, and if need be, swapping caps/etc in the amp for higher quality components) all of which are cheaper than a tranny swap.

jamie, I've never played the 30 so I can't comment on how the renegade stacks up against it.

You gotta remember the Rebel 30 is a 6v6, el84 and the renegade is a 6l6, el34 so there is gonna be a tonal difference in the way they sound. I prefer el84’s but that is just me. The bottom line is they are really 2 totally different amps, just because they are both Egnater does not mean they sound the same with one being louder. The best bet is to try each out and decide for yourself before you buy. Either way I think Egnater is the way to go they are great amps for a great price and they sound great.

I agree! I'm going to call my local Guitar Center and see if they have the Rebel 30 and Renegade in stock to AB. If they have the Tweaker in too, then I can ABC!

Say... has anyone tried the Tweaker? I know some prefer it over the Rebel tone wise. It doesn't have the tube blend, but it does have some "Tweaks!' LOL

Also, it is under $400 so even though it doesn't have silent recording with a Hot Plate you cold take a line out and kill the cab. Then all ya need is a cab sim in your daw.

I have GTR3. Perhaps it's cabs? I know some like the cab sims in Digi's Eleven.
