I'm finally gonna buy some recording gear and start making some clips. So, recommend me a mic pre. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go with the standard ole' SM57 as the mic, but what preamp do I require? And how do I go about this? Are the preamps USB or what? And what recording program should I be using?

In the past I've just made clips with the V-Amp/Pod XT running into either Krystal or Audacity.

FWIW, my PC runs Vista, 3.2ghz dual core, 2gig of RAM. This should be enough to record some damn clips, shouldn't it?

Yep that system will be fine with clips.

I have a Presonus Firebox (It's firewire, not USB...) Firewire is supposedly much better...less latency or something??

I've had it for a couple years and it hasn't let me down.

There are about 3 levels of mic pres, the sub $250 ones, the around $500 ones and the +$1000 ones. I went with the FMR audio RNP and I have been very happy with it.

Heard great things about this one : RNP8380.htm">http://fmraudio.com/RNP8380.htm</a>

EDIT: blackba beat me to it :D

i have a fmr rnp and im pretty happy with it too. i just bought a lunchbox with an api pre though, and id highly reccommend it if its in your budget. you can stack up alot of tracks of a good pre without them fighting for space.

Mbox is the most obvious answer, with Protools being the "industry standard" and all. But I might go with one of those Lexicon boxes. They make great claims about their Pantheon reverb plug-in, and they do have quite the rep in the verb dept. These boxes let you connect via USB, which is nice. Firewire is faster, but you might not need the extra speed. What I wonder about is, if you happen to add a high-end pre to one of these set-ups, can you disable the pres on the boxes? How does that work?

cart before horse...
Before worrying about a pre I'd worry about the audio interface. As in instead of using a 200 dollar unterface and 300 dollar mic pre get a 500 dollar interface.
As for program...

I just picked up a focusrite saphire. I plan on using it with reaper and an SM 57. Its got good reviews and is pretty cheap used, as in under $200 for something thats $350 new. Haven't had a chance to test it out yet, maybe after APs
