Recommendation for PRS overhaul?

Hey all,

I have a PRS custom 24 that was my main live guitar for a long time. It is not in the best shape and out of sentiment I kind of wanted to have it repaired and refinished. If possible I also wanted to swap the board to ebony from rosewood and have someone do the bird inlays. This is kind of a heavy duty order so if anyone has any recommendations for the work I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Dave is a super nice guy. I talked to him about my Knaggs last week and he was so helpful. He'll call you right after you contact him, he truly loves what he's doing.

You could always go strait to the source, and use the PTC (PRS Tech Center). Not sure how it would compare price-wise to an after market option, but at least you'd know it was "authentic".

That's a lot of work though? By the time it's all said and done, you probably could have found another guitar with the specs you want for around the same price. I'd get it functional and playing good and find another axe.

I asked Joe about putting a Floyd Rose and full size pick-ups in my Knaggs and he referred me to Dave. Dave explained that I would literally ruin my guitar and that if I wanted to mod it, I should just sell it.

So, I changed out the useless, hissing single coil pick-ups for totally noiseless Seymour Duncan "hot rails" single coil sized humbuckers and I could not be happier. The vibrato works great, but it's not a metal guitar anyway.

The Knaggs quacks like Gibson Les Paul. It plays better, more comfortably in my hands than any other of the 100's of other guitars I've owned. I still have my favorite guitars to compare it to. :geek: My Jackson is a Metal machine and a half, the difference is stark. Major difference. I love both.

Good call. I would definitely do that and re-radius at that point.
Yeah not sure what the PRS Radius is but I would go for a compound radius like 9.5 to 12 or 10-14 or 12-16.

If you like the profile you can keep as is or also maybe discuss an asymmetric profile if possible but otherwise would go with one of the compound radius recommended or similar.

Also not to knock on PRS hardware but if you feel that may need to be replaced it's a good time to check out Gotoh or even Wilkinson top end offerings and worth considering if your going to pimp your PRS out.

Maybe Wilkinson would be considered meh but it's not bad and really can't go wrong with Gotoh hardware and tuners either.

Maybe try a Duncan Antiquity bucker set even or a Sig Slash Set, those are pretty damn good.....

I hear good things about Dimarzio Tone Zones too....

Fishman Fluence pups are great too...

Maybe some after market new or vintage Santana PRS buckers....

I mean if there was a time to really pimp it out it's now and worth considering too.

I tried to get PRS PTC to do a new fretboard install after covid and very recently. They wont touch that work order anymore. They at one point would do anything you were willing to pay for.
